Re: Blending plugs.....

Step 1 color dark rings with a light color. It's easier to blend lighter colors than darker colors. This gun is made of mohagony and ash. I will be able to see my repairs but most should be able to unless they put their eyes 6" from it if I take my time. My only concern is the blending will not discolor like the wood. Uv inhibitors may help but I can always sand down and re-blend it. No big deal.

Re: Blending plugs.....

Shoot a coat of sanding sealer then add some color. No need to match it perfectly. Little variations of color adds depth...........

Shoot another coat of sanding sealer to lock in the color you just added.

Thanks.

I'm doing this blending as we speak. It's pretty easy and fast as soon as you understand color theory. Here is a good little chart with color theory that I used to carry around until i could pick out colors better

You can see the bottom one is looking a bit red so you go to the chart where it says red and go to the opposite side of the circle and add that color and it will tone it down.

Blending plugs.....

Depending on how anal I get I may tape off the mahogany and use a toner because from different angles it casts a shadow because of how many coats of epoxy are already on the gun.

I'll put some more effort into it this weekend.......

Geez now you are upping the game. When you said you were going to finishing school I thought it was something about improving table manners. Keep these tutorials coming.

Re: Blending plugs.....

looks great!!
What a beautiful gun!
I have seen it done another way with great results also:
you make the lam a little longer and cut off a piece- then cut your plugs from the cut off piece-keeping with the symmetry of your mixed lams and it will blend seamlessly.
I learned that from an interior Viking yacht finish carpenter I used to work for. He would save and number all the cut off's with corresponding pieces to be plugged that were numbered. He would then cut all his plugs from the corresponding cut- off's - twist the grain to match and Let me tell you- many of those plugs completely disappear- I mean you cannot see them at all.
