Santa Cruz, anyone? (not Santa Cruz Island)

I used to dive Monterey/Carmel whenever I had a chance, but I moved to Santa Cruz now, and I want to discover the waters around this area.

Who dives Santa Cruz area here in the forum?

I heard of Santa Cruz Kelp Stalkers, can anyone link me to them?

I've been diving the bay for years and have good experience spearfishing. I also have a tandem kayak, so I'm looking to discover the Santa Cruz waters, tag along if you're also down like me!

I've dove Santa Cruz a number of times the last few years. Along West Cliff you can luck out with good visibility, but it's often pea soup and the entries can be a bit sketchy with the swells. You can tell from the road if the visibility is going to be decent.

There's a lot of structure along West Cliff and there's a ton of good fish - lingcod, rockfish, halibut and white sea bass (though I've never seen the latter). In areas with surf you can find striped sea bass, as well.

I've also tried the kelp beds off 38th Ave. in Capitola and the visibility was just awful, though I've met folks who love it.

Bottom line: unless the visibility is really great (which it can be), to me it's worth the drive to Monterey and Carmel.

I live and dive in SC. As you've probably learned by now, it's a murkfest 99% of the time. The party can be found south of Pacific Grove.
