Re: Lionfish , Shoot and release...
I may have it - a combination on some of the ideas in this thread. The measurements are just for illustration .
A lot of us use pieces of bands as tip protectors. Take a 4 in piece of a 5/8 o.d. band and put 2 in of it into a 3 in i.d. aluminum tube, making the fit tight with aqua seal ,krazy glue e.g.. The other end is open and 1 in deep. Fill that with something hard that will stay in that end of the tube permanently - JB Weld comes to mind. When you see a lionfish, slip this over your tip, power down and stone the sucker. When his broken body is lying on the bottom, slip the gadget off your tip, power up and keep hunting. Accolades please.

Re: Lionfish , Shoot and release...
OK, here is what I'm making for a test part.
Blunt Force Trama Cap can snap over the end. Have to add a side hole for a holding clip so one doesn't lose it. Have to see if the C-clip should go in Cap or on tip. I sketched both. Anyway good enough for concept to throw out there. Not a hard part to make which is what I like. Looks like a 40 - 50 sec part minus one 2nd operation hand load for the Kid. Let me know if I fell off the deep end with this.... lol This has to be one of the wildest tips I have considered making.

Re: Lionfish , Shoot and release...
Looks pretty good. Not sure about the clip. I like the previous idea of making it threaded for screw-on attachment to standard powerhead threads (even though I already ground mine off all my shafts for better penetration...)

A C-clip in two square grooves is how the swivels work that you use. You just radius one side and you can get it apart. I would like it father down the shaft, but Wing is to close to the end.

I'm thinking that I could make a dozen of these in half an hour and use them as tip protectors also.

I got distracted with other tasks. I going to try one for a typical flopper tip tomorrow. I found a SS spring today in junk that I can cut up for c-clips.

Re: Lionfish , Shoot and release...
I got a few pieces of band kicking around the house, boat, truck ... So that part is easy. I cut a 1 1/2 inch piece off a Delrin rod that I had. I keep forgetting to get an 11/16 drill bit when I go to the hdw store.
This will remind me to do it. With the way the wind has been blowing, I need a fun thing to do.

Re: Lionfish , Shoot and release...
Here is my Lionfish bonker model 1.1. My original idea, model 1.0 turned out to be a short bobble head on the end of a spear shaft. I corrected it by making it longer - about 3 in, short enough to be above the flopper - and drilling a 5/16 hole that fits over the shaft.
I cut a 3 in piece off of some 1 in nylon round bar stock that I had and drilled a 5/8 hole in the top half and a 5/16 hole in the bottom half. I used those because I already had that size bits. I cut a piece of an old 5/8 band 1/4 in shorter than the top hole and stuffed it in . Next, I filled the rest of the top with MarineTex, rounded it off , and ran it down the side to get more contact area between the nylon and the epoxy, not to mention a more penis-like look. I haven't figured out how to carry it around yet so I'm going to put lanyard on it for now and see how it all works out. I'll try it out asap.

Re: Lionfish , Shoot and release...
Gillotine, That looks pretty good. We need a clever name for your tip that is PC.
The Bobbitt tip comes to mind. I looked up the name for spelling, that was 20 years ago. Some young bucks might not know what that means. I still need to get mine done. Been spending too much time on my 40 foot in water speed test tank.

Re: Lionfish , Shoot and release...
I forgot to mention that off duty it serves as a tip protector. Maybe you could use that idea to help with finding a name.

Re: Lionfish , Shoot and release...
For Name I like SmokinJoe better. Good knockout punch.
It was a little hard to get off the c-clip retainer. I added 6 grooves for grip and works great with a touch of grip. I also went for a hollow point look. not worried about drag and will reduce contact area some. I think I will add a side hole then it can be clipped on something when not in use. It does make a nice cover if anything. Weights in at 1 oz.
