Diving Elk City, CA

Hello friends. Are there anyone familer with diving and fishing in Elk, near the Navarro river. We have a guys trip planned for the end of June up in that area so I was looking for a friendly fellow diver to give us some pointers. We really want to ab dive, spear, and maybe even some flyfising if there is any in those parts. Any tips or advice would be greatly appreicated.

Thanks!

I have dove in Elk a couple times at the same spot. There is a gravel lot you can park in right across the street from the deli/market. Follow the trail down to the beach (its kind of a far walk) and we dove the north side of the huge cove down there and there were legal abs everywhere. Not a secret spot by any means, but it can hopefully get you started.

Awesome man. Thank you. That is encouraging. Any night life or fly fishing in the area?

Not really sure, but since the town is so tiny I would imagine there is no night life around...unless you're into night diving. And I don't know about the fly fishing either...that's a question for someone else. Have fun!

Ya Coons come out

Pretty quiet on that stretch of coast. Not sure where you are coming from but it is So dry here I would not plan on fishing too much. Lots coast to explore for diving or plan for shore fishing instead of the creeks. Lots regulations for time of year and low water restrictions read up carefully.

There's a casino (more like a big barn with slot machines!) near Pt Arena that has food & booze (phenominal clam chowder & prime rib). Otherwise, nightlife would be staring at stars if the fogs not in! Awesome area. Have fun.

Thank you everyone for the tips. This is really helpful. If anyone comes down to Paso Robles, (wine country) let me know and I will get you all set up too. Cheers!

How about surf? Any fun waves?

Becareful as you will not want to leave! This place has everything you'll need.... Killer food & drink, diving, surfing, & a cute marine bio student pulling her traps on the pier for a crab study! Have fun. T

Magic seaweed shows good conditions swell wise this sun and Monday and next Sunday and Monday with swells building midweek. Vis will vary day by day but has been pretty good lately. if you are using yaks or even floats you will want some sort of anchor because there is very little to no kelp to tie off to.

Also, the deeper you can dive the more fish you will see and bigger ones. Abs are no problem, you could close your eyes and find an 8" ab in most places.

Have fun, be careful and post a report.

I was a few miles from there a week ago. Visit was definitely better than average. Second what he said about the lack of kelp. The spot I was at had very little kelp from the early time of the season and it was compounded by a massive urchin explosion turning a very large spot I was at into an urchin barren.
