My 7-pound Cab
Ok. So after not seeing ANY fish on Saturday (ok, saw 1 nice sized black, but he got spooked), I went out again Sunday morning in Mendocino County (Navarro Beach, to be exact). I got in on the North end with Willie (from Maui). The entry was cool because we had to cross the swift Navarro river and walk through a cave that went completely through the cliff to a secluded and protected beach (where the entry was easier).
Either way, I got in the water looking for 1 more ab to bring up my current take to 3. I found it (just over 9 inches) and dropped the ab iron back onto the board and grabbed my new Beuchat Mundial that I won on Saturday (thank you Greg and Vanessa). Since I've never dove this area before, I just floated and let the current take me where it may. While I'm floating, I see what I at first thought was a gigantic kelp leave on the other side of a large piece of coral. As I got closer, I noticed it was a fish!!!! I started breathing hard and shaking a little (thinking "easy Nate, it's just a friggin' fish") as I moved the new gun into position to take the shot. THWAP!!! I shot it just behind the pectoral (?) fin on it's side and the shaft exited through the cab's mouth. Oh man, it was on then. This thing exploded into a frenzy of shaking and after I got it between my legs to hold onto it, my body literally shook as this thing thrashed left and right. I dispatched it with my Riffe to the brain and stuck it on my stringer. Then I got this funny thought. Why keep going? hehehe. I paddled in and crossed back over the swift river to where Dave and Josh were hanging out. After some pictures, I changed and Dave and I hopped in the truck for the ride home. As it turns out, Dave forgetting that he had Tino's keys was a gift in that when we picked Tino back up, we weighed my cab. 7 pounds 1 ounce. A personal best for me. Tonight I cooked up the cab with my girlfriend. We fried it in olive oil and worcestshire sauce. GREAT RECIPE. I strongly recommend it. Had some Uncle Ben's rice and corn-on-the-cob to go with it. Here's the pic of the fish. Nate

That was one pig cab Nate. How big was that thing in its gut, ha ha. Thanks again for making the long drive back, I really appreciate it.

Re: My 7-pound Cab
Nice job man. Those cabs are masters of disguise so it is awesome when you find one.
Don't let it bother you that if you shot that cab on Saturday you would have placed 2nd and won a wetsuit. ![]() ![]() ![]() Mark |

Re: My 7-pound Cab
LOL, nice.
I was eye to eye with a 14" greenling on Saturday. I decided not to shoot him, which would have put me in 2nd place and I would have won the wetsuit. The Mark that didn't leave a mark. Mark |
