It's a bit of a controversial subject. Lube does attract dirt/sand, but it also prolongs the life of the o-ring. Nautlius recommends you replace the ring every year (It's $6) so in that respect, the material won't break down in a year.

Same thing goes for go-pro housings and flash lights.

Nautilus lifeline diver's GPS VHF ?

I've had the ACR ResQLink+ PLB for years. Has always passed testing and transmits my location. Now that I'm diving I'm looking at buying the Custom Divers PLB canister to take it with me when I dive.

IMO, the Nautilus is a nice idea but I would imagine, barring a simple drift dive, that most diver/boat separations are due to poor conditions or a catastrophic failure of the boat/crew, which would diminish it's effectiveness substantially. And if you've ever followed a search and rescue prediction map it's absolutely mind boggling how fast currents can move a person. And at the end of the day, if it can't communicate with another radio, it's useless.

Also, many popular dive destination outside the first world don't have radios on their boats. At least with a PLB, you can be assured someone will be notified with your exact position rather than a blind search.

But, it's still better than nothing.

Are there any PLB's that are waterproof for diving?
