They aren't training them to be free divers, they are being trained to be Marines. Pushing them to thier limits allows them to see what they are capable of, not what they think they are capable of. Imagine that same man with a 60 lb ruck wading across a river when he steps in a deep hole and goes completely underwater and gets swept away by the current...he knows he's got time to shed some weight because he knows he's not going to die in the next 10 seconds...that training may keep him from panicking and save his life.
Some of you may see safety issues but you also have to remember that it's a TV show and you won't see everything that is really going on.
