Diver Flag

Probably going to dive some rigs this Sunday. What do y'all do for marking divers below? Flag on the boat? Or something on a float adjacent to the boat?

Any pointers on tag lines, free lines, etc. would also be appreciated.

Re: Diver Flag

When we dive rigs in Louisiana a flag on boat will suffice. Just be wary of any crew boats working in the area. The workers on manned rigs will usually let you know if they have one coming in soon. Lost 3 dive flags last season forgetting to take them out of rod holders hopping rig to rig, so you may want to bring a backup.

Re: Diver Flag

Thank you for the response, and thanks for your service for our country... Do you use any drift lines?

Re: Diver Flag

Glad I had the opportunity to serve. I used a drift line off boat once when current was real strong to grab hold of when swimming back to and waiting to board boat. I just freedive the rigs so usually jump off boat and kick hard to rig and hang on behind a leg if current is moving. If you are scuba diving, there is a great thread on here to google called "100 ways for a rig diver to die" that will give you some helpful safety info. Good luck and safe diving! Let us know how your trip goes.

Re: Diver Flag

On the boat in the tee top rod holder. I had a couple flags made at a canvas shop because the ones you pay $30 for at a dive shop are trash and come apart if you leave it up underway. I had the shop incorporate a 1 inch "loop" in the canvas when they doubled it over so I can insert heavy PVC into it than also fits in the rod holder.

Re: Diver Flag

I rigged a universal antenna mount on gunwale. Threaded end on holder mates to a 3/4" pvc female to slip fitting. A piece of pvc 3/4 in pipe with a cap on end is mast. I Velcro strap it to the bimini top frame. Flag hangs on a couple of small ss eye bolts. Easy, cheap and can be stowed or lowered to bow rail and Velcro strapped to secure during transport.

I also have a commercially made styro ball with a 4 ft whip antenna type mast up through center. It protrudes out the bottom with a lead counterweight. Tie off string goes on a 25 ft stout line to a 16 oz. bank sinker. A 2 in dia. X 10 in L pvc pipe with v notches in either end for wrapping and securing line when transporting. Use this at jetties and shallows.
