Spearfishing in Barnegat Bay - not Inlet
I was wondering if anyone could tell me what conditions are usually like IN Barnegat Bay - specifically around Marsh Elder Island which is west of Lavalette. How deep does it get? What is the visibility like? Are their fish that hold up there? I'm new to the area so I wanted to get some advice.

Water can be clear, from what I saw just watching from a deck. There are videos online that show it is not very deep in general, but it must be deep enough for navigation in some channels. I believe there are restrictions for spearfishing : not allowed during ebb currents must be very strong, like a sink that is emptying. You'll have to check that.
I never went in the bay but I post so that hopefully others will tell you what can be done or not in that bay. |

Re: Spearfishing in Barnegat Bay - not Inlet
Are you talking about the islands near the yacht club or the islands south west of West Point Island? In either case a quick look at a chart will tell you that the water depth is very shallow with the Chanels 4' to 8' deep. The bottom in either area is very weedy and muddy. Due to very little structure in this area fishing is spotty. There are times when fish migrate that you can see Blues and stripers. I live in this area and this past spring there were strippers and Blues in my lagoon.

Yeah thanks for the tip this is the area I was looking at. I didn't know it was weedy and muddy. That's helpful.
