Shark Bites Spearo: Video
I hate to be critical, but here's my thoughts.
You saw the shark 15 seconds before it bit you. Why don't you have your only line of defense locked and loaded? Why doesn't your buddy? As soon as he started finning frantically you knew he was going to get bit. Second, why is your buddy swimming away from you and not providing protection? And finally, why isn't the vessel releasing the anchor line to come get you quickly? I don't like anchoring at all. It makes no sense and this is a perfect example why we always dive with a live boat. Last edited by CuzzA; 06-07-2017 at 01:03 PM. |

That sucks. Had many a close calls similar. Hope the diver is alright and makes full recovery.

Re: Bull Shark Bites Spearo: Video
they were only 30 ft from the boat when it happened- and the capt didnt realize it was very serious.
Spearfishing charters are inherently dangerous- since everyone videos everything- people think it's easy now to do anything they see in a video. They were not prepared for sharks at all and were terrified and tried to run away from it when they saw it. newbies.... I would not have cut my anchor to get someone that was 30 ft away- it would take longer to cut the rope and make a circle to get the guy and no blood was visible- so the capt didn't seem to realize it was very serious -(which - despite being painful- was not life threatening) also- it appears he was rammed in the shin bone not bitten. If you look at the wound- there is no circular bite marks or teeth marks at all and the entire wound is about 6" x 4""- which is a pretty small bite pattern for even a 7'reef shark. (not a bull shark- did you guys watch the video?) what's next- a post that a guy had his leg taken off by a great white? he was rammed and it was a 7'reef shark

Re: Bull Shark Bites Spearo: Video
Serves me right for relaying a media report that stated Bull shark...
Great White? Meh, I don't think anyone is making as much of a big deal about it as you believe. The video was posted, I shared it here and added my analysis of the incident. Easy to armchair quarterback, but I can tell you, barring actually losing my gun, you wouldn't find me on the surface with my catch without my gun. And my first instinct if it were away from me would be to get it. I agree though, it likely would have been a non-event if the diver kept his cool when the shark approached. We disagree on the anchor, but to each his own. Mine is rigged with a quick release, no cutting required. |

That sucks. Live and learn. Lot of ways to avoid that problem though. Before I even watched it, I thought - I bet its not a bull. Not sure why everyone assumes every gray shark in the ocean is a bull shark.

It's funny though because another very experienced spearo told me it's a sandbar... Everyone is a shark expert except me. |

Re: Bull Shark Bites Spearo: Video
No, I think some teeth made contact with his shin. There was a chunk out of his fin too. He was going for the fish and unfortunately the diver was in the way. Reminds me of diving in the Bahamas. Shoot fish, keep fish out of water if possible, boat better be on diver like white on rice. It seemed like it took forever for boat to get to divers. But these things can happen fast. I'd say he was lucky because it could have been a lot worse. Hope her recovers quickly. It will be a cool scar at least...

Re: Bull Shark Bites Spearo: Video
I think sharks sense fear - he must have sensed a LOT there. Most of us experienced spearos, especially on THIS coast, know how to deal with sharks, and how to stay calm. It WILL happen to you eventually, so be prepared.

Re: Shark Bites Spearo: Video
Wait, am I seeing this right? The shark looks like he went after the fish on the shaft, which was attached to his gun. That fish should have been on a stringer and that shaft back in the gun ASAP.

Re: Bull Shark Bites Spearo: Video
I can't believe he was more worried about getting his gun back than getting on the boat. The shark seems to have first taken a piece of his fin.
It looks like they were snorkeling, so most people will carry the fish back to the boat rather than put it on a stringer. I'm not sure if I have an idea about what would be sure to completely prevent that sort of thing. Didn't seem like they had a whole lot of warning.

Re: Bull Shark Bites Spearo: Video
I posted in dive accidents forum but here we go ;
I saw the video that was longer , with him swimming back to boat and getting on the video is 4:41long , the hit is in the first 50 seconds , it takes over 3 mins to get back to the boat . the newspaper said 150 ft away from boat , is where attack occurred . these guys were on an area known for commercial yellowtail powerchumming . the sharks are ALWAYS there . the fish had been wounded and gotten off then shot again . commercial yellowtailing closed on the 3rd , the fleet of com yellowtail boats who dump hundreds of lbs of chum in the water at a time were not there due to the closure. , no one told the sharks , all they knew was the daily food source was not there . they were attracted to the first noise they heard . the line was passed through the fish between the shaft and gun . making it a little harder to get off . the boat was anchored ? why ? one member said on the other post it was a charter vessel . where was the Captain ? was he /her in the water ? violating CG rules of remaining with the vessel ? I see the girl , Amanda , onboard . apparently the bitten spearos girlfriend. with several others , why didn't they crank up ? poor selection of spot , NO Wetsuit ! which would have made this "half bite" less serious , he received 50 stiches , much more serious than it looks . NO PPD ! which I carry a 357 in my wetsuit sleeve whenever spearing . THANKS RAY ! the news article said he had been spearing for 2 years . this video creates more questions than answers got to give the guy credit though , he stayed calm , breathing was level and steady and he got himself back to the boat without help . his buddies scattered though , but yeah , he did seem more concerned about his gun , maybe he did not realize the seriousness of the bite , orange rash guard ? is that to make finding the body easier ? the size of the reef shark is quoted at 8 ft , that may be a little more than actual size , but if you've a shark coming in near your jewels , I'll grant some points on that . at least his spirit wasn't broken said he plans to continue spearing when healed . btw there is a gator hunting site that sells ppds similar to RAY ODOR's the guys name is Dennis ,calls himself Cooter , his number is 352 279 6961 , 25 bucks a piece , and no I am not associated with him . I wonder if he wants to sell that bitten fin , I have a left one just like it. the difference is , the shark that bit mine is dead. good luck to the fellow he deserves a cold beer . Last edited by slowboat; 06-08-2017 at 10:13 AM. Reason: sell that fin added |
