Re: Deadly Diver Disaster On Haulover Beach - Spearfishing Diver Rest in Peace 6-8-14
This is a horrible thing to read, and I can't imagine having to live it.
You should take comfort in knowing that you did EXACTLY the right things by: 1)calling for help as soon as there was an emergency. Any delay in that initial call only decreases the possibility of rescue, or even finding the missing diver, and 2)anchoring the boat. You have a last seen point LSP that can be easily lost by delaying in anchoring the boat there or at least popping a buoy on the spot. Your efforts gave Nate the best possible potential for rescue. I am sorry for your loss.

Man, I am so sorry for your loss. It's gotta be extremely tough to bear. I wish I had some inspirational words to help ease the pain that you must be feeling, but all I can give is my empathy. Take care.

Terrible news and my condolences to all the friends and family.
Andrew when I first read the reports before anyone was named I was thinking of who was on SB from the area and I thought of you. Sorry to hear of your loss.

Gotcha. Thanks for the answer. Didn't see any details so was curious. Scary stuff. And I am sorry for your loss. Can't imagine losing a friend that way and hope it's something I never have to face.

Re: Deadly Diver Disaster On Haulover Beach - Spearfishing Diver Rest in Peace 6-8-14
The solution is very simple, dive with a buddy. 1 up/1 down is the only way!
Everybody please be safe. Please learn from this tragedy. Diving solo is never safe! Anything can happen and without a dive partner there to help, you're done. Andrew - you have my sincere condolences. I've been present at 2 tournaments where friends have died. It sucks! Scott |

I am so sorry for your loss. One can only hope they pass doing something they love with best friends... We all consciously except the risks when we jump in the water with or without a buddy. I hope you continue to do what you love.

RIP Nate, Andrew you did all the right things and its very commendable how you kept your wits under such traumatic circumstances. I am a firm believer in buddy diving while spearfishing. I am getting to the point that I wont allow spearos on my boat that don't subscribe to the same principle. SAFETY is #1

Re: Deadly Diver Disaster On Haulover Beach - Spearfishing Diver Rest in Peace 6-8-14
Well I finally got word of what the official cause listed for Nate's death was. came back as an accidental drowning.
Ive been doing ok and been in touch with his family and they are doing as best as they can.

Thanks for sharing that news Andrew. Accidental drowning is the usual cause of death when other possibilities like heart attack are eliminated. It probably was a shallow water blackout that caused the drowning. At least Nate's family and friends like you as well as the diving community now have a measure of closure and realize Nate passed doing his passion. May Nate rest in eternal peace. Tony |
