Tonga, spearfishing pictures

Here are some pictures of my spearfishing adventures in the Kingdom of Tonga. I have lived here 13 years and learned to spearfishing when I was 14, never looked back after that.

God bless

Nice unicorn trevally! And I am very jealous of the green jobfish...

What is the tastiest fish you're spearing out there?

Re: Tonga, spearfishing pictures

Well it would probably be a close tie for 2nd with our grouper and reef snappers, Midnight snapper would be first though!! I'll attach a pic of one.

Midnight Snapper, huh? http://www.whatsthatfish.com/fish/mi...snapper/378#10

I've never even heard of the darn thing! How do you prepare it? Fried? Grilled? Sashimi?

I'm always curious as to what the best tasting fish in different parts of the world are. So far, my favorite is wahoo, but I have not had enough variety to know better.

Midnight snapper is a very white and almost sweet meat, fried, grilled, or boiled in coconut milk (island style) it turns out great! I have never heard of it being eaten raw, most reef predators around here are not eaten raw (grouper, snapper) the islanders here prefer the herbivores like parrot fish and unicorns for that.

That fish sounds like a perfect candidate for Thai Steamed Fish Curry! http://heartofthehouse.org/steamed-f...ry-style-thai/

Just so you know, I am salivating in Pavlovian fashion, right now.

I'm seeing a few fish which could be considered High Risk Cigatuerra.. maybe it's not an issue? But, I'm pretty sure I've heard of Cig in that area. Careful.

Re: Tonga, spearfishing pictures

No ciguatera there? Big coral trout and Red Bass are notorious ........

You smoke the big GT?

Awesome fish!!!

How you manage to live there so long??

Re: Tonga, spearfishing pictures

Here in our waters on the big island (nuku'alofa) our fish such as the trout and reef snapper (moses perch, midnight snapper, red bass, paddle tail snapper ect) dont have ciguatera. Even the moray eels are good!
On a separate note,I have a mate here that cleans and eats Fugu (smooth skin puffer)!! Now that is scary hah!

Wahooooo,
I didn't smoke the Gt, how does it turn out?
I gave it to a bible school here, they really enjoyed the fresh fish.

My parents are missionary's here, with my love for spearfishing i ended up starting my own charter boat business, running spearfishing safaris.

Re: Tonga, spearfishing pictures

I went up with my two friends a few weeks ago for a 10 day spearfishing trip in our northern island group of Ha'apai. I have some good friends on a small island called Uiha. There are about 300 people living on this island, most of which either farm or fish, the family I stayed with have been long time net fishermen, but they also were divers in times past.

Here are a few pictures of our trip and fish we speared.

Vaea speared a monster Red bass, I wish we could have weighed it Im sure it would have beaten the current world record of 18.3 lbs.
John speared a very nice GT, his first dogtooth and some good Mu, job fish and trout.
I shot some mu, trout and several jobfish one was a beauty of 19lbs that put a huge bend in my shaft when it tangled on the reef. Lucky for me our hosts sold this fish at a fish-n-chips shop on another island so it got weighed ! ( will never forget to bring a scale of my own next time )Unfortunately though the go pro pics turned out bad on the evening shots, I guess thats why they have flash's on cameras ha!
