Anyone use zipties for making bands?

Theres a company out there selling quick band kits but they are using zip ties instead of a constrictor knot.

I like the sound of this.

Anyone else doing this?

What type of zipties are people using?

Thanks for any and all input on this subject

For a light polespear you can get away with it ,but I wouldn't do it on a speargun ,longterm it just won't hold up

Also the 'Width factor" of a typical zip tie means that it will take many more factors of compression versus the thin profile of line string. Compressing latex band material is not easy especially under a significant load.

To be fair - they arent standard zipties.

I came across these guys on Daryl Wong's Instagram - but dont know anyone that has used them.

Still wouldn't do it , just becuse they have a metal barb doesn't mean the tie itself won't break , I use 1/2" wiDE ties for work and break them all the time just tightening them .

As a emergency thing sure , but a constricor knot is very ez to do . Also I use 80kg dacron and a double constricor knot so a total strenth of 320kg (4 x 80kg loops ) way stronger than a single zip tie

Look closer at the product description it comes with 3/8 polespear rubber .

All I use is SS barbed zip ties...but they are not what you want for this application!
But prove it to yourself...sometimes you have to learn the hard way.

So to clarify - you do not use them for band tying.

Thanks guys - figured it was worth a shot and might make replacement quick.

I will stick to tying constrictor knots.

Re: Anyone use zipties for making bands?

Those kits are great when you need a band in a pinch but I would never use one longterm. Its a good kit to have on board for anyone to use if they have a band break and they dont have a back up.

Re: Anyone use zipties for making bands?

Phil is correct IMHO.

The constrictor knots are way stronger and not even close. The Cable Tie method do work pretty good on Pole spear rubbers and are great for use in the field.

There are many cable tie versions out there.

The one's I used are rated for 50 lbs. As Phil says I have busted them and the plastic is the weak link.

I switched to black ties a while ago. These are better for UV than the white version.

I like the Thomas and Betts Tie (I love their connectors and other electrical products).

Others are Panduit, 3M, Phoenix Contact, and many more.

If you can't get a specification sheet, you might want to pick a different cable tie.

If the clip in the head isn't stainless, not going to be very strong.

Here is a picture of clip in the cable tie head.
