Re: Current Vis - Tampa Bay Region (Homosassa to Sarasota)

We finally got out and started off in 35' west of Clearwater and found a solid 20+ of horizontal vis. Moved out to 60' and vis was great up top but dropped to 15-20' on bottom. Got some nice hogs at both depths and saw a few nice gags.

I've never seen SO many BIG fish circling us that we couldn't shoot. Big gags, AJs, ARS, and Triggers. SO frustrating.

The fish on May 31, will get a flash text to leave the area. You'll go to those spots June 1 and they will be gone.

Here's a neat sight we saw on the way back in - not great video unfortunately, but damn it was amazing to see over 100 rays swimming in the shallow water. NO COBIA, though

Viz is really good farther offshore. 100' plus most spots. Waters 74 degrees and headed up!

Re: Current Vis - Tampa Bay Region (Homosassa to Sarasota)

Great day out today. 2-3 footers with long wave period on the way out, calmed down somewhat mid-day, then wind picked up on the way back in but we got in before it go too bad. Viz in 60 feet was great - no snot, modest current. I'd say about 25-35 feet vertical, maybe 40 horizontal in some spots.

INSANE amount of fish - tons of gags, ARS, mangos, hogs, baitfish, saw some spanish and king mack, tons of triggers, and we nailed some BIG lionfish. James will be on shortly with pics and video of our bounty - 18 hogs, 20 mangos, 8 lionfish, a few assorted others. Could have limited on 1 or 2 dives on monster gags and ARS.

Very nice. We had pretty good viz today too. Current was ripping though....

In 60' it was hazy but pretty clean water. Today was the last day of wetsuits at that depth until the winter.

Lots of fish everywhere. I'll get some more pics and vids up tomorrow, Eric. I'm beat.

You guys seem to be getting out a lot. Have you looked into any of the local tournaments? The Southern Open is next weekend.

We did the TBSC last year. I'd be up for more tournaments. Here's yesterdays haul. Not bad. Hog's everywhere. Mostly 15" at that depth. Bigger mango's were really sketchy. And of course plenty of fat gags and endangered ARS.

Gents, may I ask, at depth, what is the best way to tell the difference between a red snapper and say a bigger mango? Will the mango appear darker, do you tell by the shape?

ARS have a more rounded head (not as sharp), will appear "taller", fatter, and the BIGGEST difference is they are like red grouper - dumb and curious and won't bolt like a similar sized mango. Easy pickings (for 3 days, at least) - LOL

Took me some time to figure it out myself - I kept wondering why these HUGE snapper were not being spooked away like mangos - then it hit me.
