A Monster Film, Video and Television Experience - the NAB Show in Las Vegas!
I have been on site at the annual NAB convention in Las Vegas since last Friday and will be back in Florida this Thursday..
Last year I delivered this report: What Happens in Vegas? The 2013 National Association of Broadcasters Convention! The National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Convention has over 100,000 attendees and over 1,500 exhibitors This monster show has the latest and greatest in film, video and television technology. And, of course, what happens in Vegas, Stays in Vegas .......... except for this report. I arrived last Friday and am staying at the Palazzo Casino Hotel on the Las Vegas Strip. It never ceases to amaze me how palatial these Las Vegas resort hotels actually are. It must be nice to have the sort of wealth that allows some of these high rollers to live this mega affluent lifestyle constantly. Luckily, I have a TV Network client paying for my trip. First, a photo essay on the accommodations. Last edited by SpearMax; 04-19-2014 at 09:16 PM. |

Dining and clubbing are next. Club Tao had a few thousand people inside Saturday night.

The Convention Center had many great workshops over the weekend before the main show opened.

The Monday opening day for the Exhibitors featured a huge luncheon with the producers and cast of "Everybody Loves Raymond" who were inducted into the NAB Hall of Fame. They held a table discussion with them that was hilarious.

One of the most fascinating presentations I saw was by Dr. Jenny Read of Newcastle University in the UK. She is a brilliant and charming lady.
One has to wonder with all these advances in technology, when do we reach the capacities of the human eyes to be able to detect a difference in the image quality? Here below are a few of Jenny's many slides she graciously shared with me after the show. The basic conclusion was that 4k resolution reaches the spatial resolution capacity of most situations for our human eyes, but the other aspects of vision such as temporal resolution, dynamic range and color have not been achieved yet in the current technology that match the human eye's abilities. It sure looks like plenty of new iterations of cameras and displays are coming for many years to come. Last edited by SpearMax; 05-05-2014 at 10:30 PM. |

Thanks for the offer Tony. But as I said above, the are over 1,500 booths here and in two days since the exhibit Hall opened Monday I have not been able to get to all of them. So, on my last day today I will try real hard to complete my report comprehensively. Thanks again. Tony

Re: A Monster Film, Video and Television Experience - the NAB Show in Las Vegas!
OK, I am going to cut to the chase by starting with Video and TV Technology I know you Spearboard watchers love. I went to the Gopro booth which was hopping with activity. I think people just love watching all the cool POV (point of view) action videos on display. I wished I could gather a little intel from these GoPro guys on when they would release a 4k 30 or 60 frame new version of their product. Their lips are sealed, wisely I suppose.
The other end of the scale from GoPro are the Arriflex cameras like this Alexa rig which costs around $250,000 just before and after the guitar player below. This high-end camera is like those used on the feature film "Gravity" starring George Clooney and Sandra Bullock which I saw in IMAX 3D in New York city last fall. Arriflex also has a lower end documentary camera with amazing qualities called the Amira. I seem to recall this rig is around $50,000 to $60,000. There's quite a few of us out here Tony. I was working traffic control at the South Hall on Monday for a little overtime. Easy money! Loads of cool stuff going on in there, thanks for the pics and report!

I'm sitting in the South Hall now eating a sandwich. There is so much stuff to see I only just made it to the South Hall today which is my last day. I have a huge number of pics to post up in the coming days. Maybe next year we can have a Vegas spearboard meet and greet night. Tony |
