One Dead, more Missing off San Clemente Island

... A heads up if you plan to go offshore seeking Bluefin this weekend...In a military mishap, one marine is confirmed dead and eight are missing after a returning Amfib transport started sinking off the Northwest section of San Clemente island in water too deep to dive..Seven others were recovered alive, several with injuries...Keep a sharp lookout for floating gear and possible body recovery...15 marines and a sailer were on the vehicle when it started sinking...additional info pending..
...Since this may involve a wide search area, parts of the island that were open may be closed at present. Advise checking before heading over.. The current charts show currents flowing westward...But, based on my involvement in prior searches: an outside southbound current, a swell out of the southwest, west wind and tides generally move items southeast and they may come ashore between Newport Beach and Dana Point...There are confusing numbers being put out by various agencies...Hopefully, the news will come out more positive as time goes by..

Current was running downhill off SCI when we left there around 3 yesterday. Ocean is full of yellowtail, tuna, and god knows what else. RIP to those servicemen.

Sadly, this is now a recovery operation...Upper level brass should be held to answer for this fiasco...Putting these kids into 30,000 pound metal tombs in the open ocean is sheer stupidity....These WWII relics should have been removed from ocean use years ago...

Re: One Dead, more Missing off San Clemente Island

Update: Doing an online search, my screen shows the Dominator recovery craft has located wreckage and some bodies on the backside near the west end of the island...Why they put them on the exposed side in open ocean makes little sense....Normally, landing operations are on the inside at Northwest harbor...Been woke up more than once with Seal teams under my anchored boat (hopefully the hull mines weren't armed) and tracers lighting up the sky at Northwest harbor...
...First time I took my 9-year old there overnight, he woke up yelling, "We're on the rocks"..as shells thundered and beach explosions shook the cabin at midnight....
...8/5/20 update: The vehicle with all the remaining marines and a sailor found inside, is in the process of being raised today...this according to the latest press release..
