Re: Current Vis - Tampa Bay Region (Homosassa to Sarasota)

Glad we made the decision to go out, Tyson. I probably should have come up immediately on that 45 foot dive due to the 5'-hazy 10' viz, but the mangos were more than eager to jump on my stringer.

Snotty heading out with a few 3-4 footers, but tides and wind/waves made a decent trip back in. Wish we could have hit the RJ for a chance at AJ and cobia, but there was already a boat on it, so no biggie.

Saw some decent skittish gags, but no lionfish anywhere. Sherpa were small.

Those jellyfish sure were a pain to (mostly) avoid, but we shall all remember the Moustache (only if said with a British accent, otherwise "Mustache") of Pain!

Thanks for the report Tyson. Glad to hear there is still decent vis out there after the recent weather.

For sure! He saw me putting the carcasses into the pot, and he jumped right in and grabbed the biggest head and said to me, "Here ya go!" It was awesome.

We are really hoping sometime soon to be able to take Tyson's oldest out on the Pelican for his first spearfishing trip. He just got certified this year. I bet he will turn into an amazing underwater hunter.

Heck yeah! It was great on burgers too. I even sprinkled it on eggs that I cooked over the campfire right before we were going on our Appalachian Trail hike back in July, that was great too!

Did you try any of the blackberry hot sauce? I love that stuff on tacos. https://smokinjssignaturesauces.com/...t-pepper-sauce

Re: Current Vis - Tampa Bay Region (Homosassa to Sarasota)

Out of New Port Richey Saturday 9/26/2020
Viz 15-20 feet. Lot of jellyfish. Lot of different types. Moon, Box, "Medusa".
82 degrees. Dove 95' x 3 and last dive in 85'.
Dove ledges, wrecks and pothole.

Goal was to get our AJ's. Got our 4. Limit of mangroves. ONE gag, 2 red, 6 hogs, 3 lion (plenty of them around), small Permit, 3 scamp.

Lot of big ARS seen. Kind that are pushing 20#

Lot of mangrove snapper and several big ones over 5#.

Here's some video of dive1 in 95'. Looks like we will mostly be on shore for a bit, Hoping October is much better than Sept. only got out 2x in Sept.

Re: Current Vis - Tampa Bay Region (Homosassa to Sarasota)

Headed out N and S of the Egmont channel yesterday 10/16. Morning was nice, 1-2’ seas. Viz was not ideal - hazy 12’ horizontal in 60fsw in the bottom. Lots of large particulate in the water. Vertical viz felt like around 6’. Had to check my watch on the way down so I knew when I was getting close to the the bottom. Pretty fishy on the ledges. Shot a decent red grouper. Next, a very nice hog, when a bull came out of nowhere and snatched it 2 seconds after I shot it.

We decided to head out deeper to find cleaner water. By the time we did, wind was close to 20kts and we had to come home 50 miles NE in 3-4 footers. Of course NOAA predicted 2’ seas all day. Rough ride, not a lot of fish but still an enjoyable day on the water in my book.

Lots of basketball size jellyfish out there too with 3'-5' tentacles.

Re: Current Vis - Tampa Bay Region (Homosassa to Sarasota)

Out both Thursday (nicer day) and Friday (by afternoon getting snotty). Both pretty good (shootable) viz in 32-65 feet.

Not a lot of fish (1 gag, 14 hogs, 20 mangos, 3 porgy, 1 lion over the course of 2 days with 7 divers) but nice to be out.

Had a little drama on Friday where I had to call the Coast Guard as we were getting nervous about losing a diver, but he came up 10 minutes later and deployed his SMB.

Guys, seriously, spend the money and get a 6 foot SMB and insist that everyone on board have one. Cheaper than a PLB and canister, but very essential gear. Test it, know how to deploy it. Very easy to lose sight of bubbles in chop, and we all know how distractions, inattentiveness, and just plain distance and waves can make it hard to spot someone on the surface.

I won't let anyone dive on my boat without one.

PS - thanks to everyone who reached out to check up on me - the rumor mill had ME lost at sea. Not the case, but thanks anyway for the concern.

Re: Current Vis - Tampa Bay Region (Homosassa to Sarasota)

Out of NPR Sunday Oct 25. Ran 62 miles. Seas were 3-5' all morning. Following sea on way out. Dove in 95'. Water 80degrees. Viz 40-50'. Still jellyfish around. Goal was to get our ARS and AJ and then come in shallower for gags and Hogs. Cpt and his buddy came up with 4 ARS pushing 15# and 4 nice big male hogs. Was optimistic for my dive. Was not as fruitful but we got 3 ARS and some mangos plus I got 2 nice hogs. Next dive was a wreck in same depth. Big AJ's came up to boat. Cpt got 62# AJ and his buddy got one. We back dove and closed out AJ. Moved in shallower because of fears if sea did not lay down we would never get home. Ran 25 miles E at 10 mph and dove in 65'. Viz was a hazy 20' and temp dropped to 77-79. Just small fish. Would have done better staying in 95' with better viz and bigger fish, but that was appropriate call for rough day. Heard viz was very nice closer to shore.

Thanks for the report. That is a long way to run in those conditions. At least the water was warm and clear and the red snapper were around!
