My gun developed a warp. Any ideas?

I built a gun about a year or two ago and it just now has developed a warp. I think its because I left it laying in the boat for a couple of weeks.

Any ideas for straightening? It has a gradual horizontal bow of about 1/8" overall.

I was thinking about wrapping the bottom half of the gun in carbon fiber while keeping it straight on some sort of jig.

Gun is mahogany and can bee seen here. http://spearboard.com/showthread.php?t=187254

On a side note about the gun I am eliminating the tied on bands and drilling for a regular band set up. Those things are a bitch trying to reload in a tangled mess.

They typically shape/bend wood in a steam box. If you warped, there was either a residual stress left in your laminates or perhaps your blanks weren't fully dry/cured and leaving it in the boat got it hot enough to allow it to take a set. bummer either way

the more I think about it the more crazy thought pop into my head.

Thinking about taking out a 1" wide by 1" deep channel out of the bottom of the gun, inserting 1x1 aluminum tube stiffener the entire length, leaving a void in the gun that can be used for water ballasting. Then cover that in carbon fiber.

Probably easier to straighten the track than the stock.

...what you are describing above is basically how a guitar neck works. I just don't think it would be very practical in a speargun.

My suggestion would be to first hang the gun vertically for a couple of weeks. Next, plane the sides straight, then route out the existing track parallel with the sides and re-pour it, then cut a new track....and don't "store" the gun in the boat.

Even though the gun is two years old?

Time for a new stock. Reuse all the hardware.

"Time for a new stock. Reuse all the hardware." Don't waste time trying to straighten it once it has moved. Wood stores energy and it will move again even if you are able to bring it straight. If it is laminated the chances are even less of success.

You built it once, next time it will be even better.

What's age got to do with it? If restoring the old blank doesn't work, you can always try "plan B". All you've lost is some time and a little bit of epoxy. Some of the best guns I've made have been from re-purposed teak from yacht railings and trim that has been around "forever".

Do you still sell blanks? If not I need to make one long enough to have a finished 64" stock.

Re: My gun developed a warp. Any ideas?

If you have a Heat gun and a few clamps you could try bending it back. It might not work, but if you already have those things you could try. Any finish like Epoxy on the gun would get ruined in that area and need to be redone. The idea would be to set up your clamps so that you can bend the gun in the exact opposite way and really stress it, like make that thing into a bow. you need to heat up the gunstock in the area you want to bend until it's hot to the touch I mean 30 minutes with the heat guns back and forth. Then Set it and leave it overnight. But you really need to stress it. If it's straight afterwards let it hang for a week or two. Check again. Essentially you are allowing the wood to stretch a little.

Re: My gun developed a warp. Any ideas?

I ended up ruining the gun yesterday trying to route a channel free hand.

Thank you all for the ideas.

Behslayer, I sent you a PM.
