Spearing in the Abacos

Anybody out there ever had success freediving in the Abacos?
I'm headed there next Thursday and would appreciate some tips on spots you'd recommend.
We'll be going for lobsters (opens 8/1) & anything else worth eatin'.
Thanks!

I could use some tips too. I am heading over next Wed.

Hunt,
Where are you going in the Abacos? We are heading to Green Turtle but plan to be at Carters on 8/1. Are you taking a boat over and if so whats the name of it? Maybe I will give you a call over there on the VHF and we can compare notes. I will be cruising on the Gaspar.

There are a lot of great spots to shoot stuff in the bahamas. Most of the dive shops have someone that goes spearfishing, and there are a lot of charters. You can ask for advise on where to go if the area is new to you, or you can find a reef, and jump in.

There are so many reefs, you shouldn't have much of a problem finding one.

Thanks for the tip PaulR & Freedive.
Grande,
I'm staying in Hopetown. I've heard there's some decent spots right off the beach there.
Heading to Nipper's on Sunday for sure.
Where's Carter's?
I should be monitoring 16. My handle is Hot Nuts.

You really don't want to miss nippers!!!!!! If thats the only thing you do on the trip, do it!

Now I know where you are going to be, i can say to go to the southeast side of great guana, and there is a bounch of reef about 100 yrads off the shore. About 25' to the sand, and 5-10'to the coral. Big ledge. There is some sort of tower on the hill side(if i remember right). If you see that, you are there.

Re: Spearing in the Abacos

Hey I'm Daniel the founder of Red Rum International. I'm Going to the Abacos From May 14-May 18, staying in Elbow Cay. I am a pretty solid Spearfisherman, especially on a pole spear. I can free-dive up to 40 ft Comfortably with a spear but will be with some novices and would not like to extend passed 30ish. We are renting a boat and are looking to freedive some good spots. I am specifically looking to land some nice hogs and grouper. I understand that the Spearfishing gets better the further NW you travel in the Abacos. I don't want to extend the range of the boat but understand I may have to travel to find good grounds. Where do you suggest that I go?
What are the names of some of the reefs?
I have heard of good things happening off of Green Turtle & Treasure Cays, where else is good?
Also, I would like to grab some Conchs being that lobser wont be in season. What are some good spots to grab conchs? What about Starfish for my lady friends?
