RIP freediver "Michael Reed".

Any more info on this? Didn't know him, but im always bummed out to hear this kind of stuff. googled but couldn't find anything.

I think Spearboard should have subforum to honor fallen divers. Could serve as a reminder to us all.

Mike died doing what he loved. We've never met but we were FB friends. He will be missed by many.

Its super tragic. New baby on the way.

I hope accidents like this can become less frequent and that something can be learned from each of them.

I wonder if an FRV could have helped?

May Mike rest in eternal peace.

Spearoo, I'm working on something like this for the board concerning dive accidents and incidents. I also may do a consolidation thread in the New forum of all the years of accidents, incidents and deaths reported on spearboard over the many years so everyone can see them in one place with links back to the original threads so those will be preserved as is.

Re: RIP freediver "Micheal Reed".

That is an excellent idea Tony. Its sadly needed.
The sport is amazing but the ocean can be a tricky mistress and many better Divers than us all, have taken their last breath hearing that siren song that lures us all to its shores.
Thanks Tony for taking the time to encourage discussion that will safeguard us all.
One thing is a abstract chat on safety, its much closer to home, to see, bad ass water men claimed by the sea.

Some diver were members here and others not, the common thread, a love for the ocean and huge tragedy

Johny Long Blades was the first diver I knew (through Spearboard) that died diving.
Then YoungGun Carson.
Then Nikki, dove the very first Spearboard open with her.
Then Keysdiver(traffic accident trailering to go dive ) Gene Higa, Bill Crawford, outdoorCatholic, Mike Reed, Angel Mimbela, the list goes on and on.

Sometimes I tell my family the news other times not. But a place where all these divers are honored and the accidents learned from by the community would be a great step.

An FRV on every freediver would be great as well, perhaps a spearboard group buy?

If I could afford it, I would make every diver on my boat wear one.

Stay safe guys.

Re: RIP freediver "Micheal Reed".

Spearmax you should think of how it revolves, On Scubaboard they use it to ridicule others, when the HellDiver died on the oil rig a few years ago, scuba board members signed up here to start a war on how unsafe spear divers are and they will use spear board threads to prove there right.

After that I never posted on Scubaboard again, they all posted a first post of I am thinking of trying spearfishing and then blasted Roc(i think his name is) here as he just lost his best long time friend.

At best just condolences section or memorial, IMO I would not do accidents and Incidences.

P.S. I won't even go look there to see how that section revolves on that board, but you can and make your own judgement.

Re: RIP freediver "Micheal Reed".

Non-hunters die too, Kehloken. I understand your line of thought but I also don't think we should hide who we are and how we live. If others want to use our experiences as ammunition against us, well, they just suck and I believe in Karma. Everyone lives their life their own way. Some take more chances than others. Some get away with it. Some don't. I think we can all learn from knowing what happened to our fallen brothers and sisters as well as a place to honor them. I think that having a 'Memorial' forum is a great idea.

I don't do a dive that I don't think about the wonderful people we have lost to this sport. It has helped to make me a more consciences diver.

RIP Mike.

Look at what link you referred before you post irrelevant information on someone's memorial thread. Internet fail

I met a bunch of guys from Louisiana that knew him. Sounded like a stand up guy. Godspeed brother.

Re: RIP freediver "Micheal Reed".

Im pretty sure thats not the same Mike.

I agree the Memorial section should be moderated in such a way that only respectful discussions on safety, condolences and perhaps a good fish tale or 2 is told. It should never allow anyone to disrespect any of the divers. Im pretty sure the members will police it themselves somewhat

I think a thread per each incident, with a master thread of all reported incidents would be appropriate and help make it very real.

To the haters: You can't have it both ways, its either Dangerous or its unfair to the fish. We do it because its what we love, the diving community should be one big family, not splintered, live and let live

I have faith that it won't devolve.

Thanks for thinking about it Tony
