Help me understand the logic...

...of spearing a cuda.

Now, I'm new to the board here and I do not want to step on any toes. I simply want to understand a potentially different perspective.

I've been a diver since 1994.

I've been an offshore fisherman since 1973.

I'm looking to start freediving and spearfishing...

Is the cuda perceived as the "rat/cockroach" of the sea so it is OK to spear them?

Again, no judgement on my part as I may have been missing out on something that I was not aware of.

I'm curious to know how people perceive and handle them.

Thanks!

Believe it or not, a lot of people eat them... I have not and will never eat one so I cant tell you if they are safe to eat or if they taste good at all....

They make great chum though!!

I've heard small ones "might" be OK to eat. I know they are the smelliest fish I've ever pulled into a boat and they always have parasites all over them!

Yep, they are a great shark bait!

Geeez, where have you been all that time? I mean..under a rock? ( East Florida?)
I really don’t mean to step on your toes, but by now you should be aware that Cuda is DAMN good eating. ( Now that you are in the Edgewater area)
Most of us try to stay 3' or less cause of the remote possibility of cig.
But you know all predator fish can have cig don’t you!?

SeaTux,

Dude, I've NEVER eaten a cuda and don't plan to!

How can you eat something that smells so bad and has all kinds of creepy crawlies on it!?

As mentioned above, I've kept a few for shark bait for "fiends" that want to catch a shark, but otherwise, I get them out of the boat and back into the water ASAP.

Let me know if you want me to keep a few for you when I'm fishing out of Ponce. I'll make sure I only keep the ones less than 3'.

Thanks for the reply, you put a smile on my face!

In some area people eat barracuda, in south florida we consider them pests or shark bait. Just like the parrot fish, they are a tropical reef fish here but in other countries is dinner.

Your loss dude, not mine... you know what they say? "Once you get past the smell...you've got it licked!"

But back to Cuda.. I've had taste test dinner parties; between cuda, grouper, and snapper( all fixed the same way, side by side) and cuda won all the votes! Once you filet it and cook it, if you werent told it was cuda, you would never know.

Hmmm... are you sure about that....talking cuda again... I don't know. I'd be VERY skeptical about the "taste test" dealio... I guess I'll take your word for it and would have to see someone else eat it first! When do you want your fresh filets?

I sincerely thank you for the compliment! "kid" I'd love to be one again! Going on 49 but still a "kid" at heart...

I am shocked that you guys eat them. Maybe I should give it a try. You know, maybe I should give dog a try while I'm at it!!!!!!!

Cudas are shark bait. Spear em, but don't eat em

But seriously I only spear cudas if they challenge me.
