Re: Current Vis - Tampa Bay Region (Homosassa to Sarasota)

Today 30 miles NW off anclote island... was flat this morning, then there was a large storm that rolled in and waves picked up to 2-3 real quick. Viz was top to bottom in 52 feet, No gumbo. Seen an ARS about 20", bonito, aj's, and a lot of gags. We came In to 40ish because of the storm and the gumbo was almost impossible to hunt in pretty much all the way in. We did manage 1 lionfish, 1 hog,(6.5lbs 22" to the fork) and 4 gags
All in all, good day. FYI, everything payed down to almost flat on the way in.

Re: Current Vis - Tampa Bay Region (Homosassa to Sarasota)

Went out of Clearwater on a buddy's boat (first time on a Cat, to whit a 26 foot Glacier Bay displacement hulled boat, very nice!). Headed out to some new spots (and one old one) in 50-60 feet. Top to bottom viz, but got a little hazy approaching the bottom from all the floating vegetative matter, mostly bits of "fresh" clumps of the algae/grass growing everywhere. Made it tougher to spot the fish, especially the gags. No sharks (finally!) - shot a nice hog, mango, and two 26-27" gags. No ARS or AJs seen.

Re: Current Vis - Tampa Bay Region (Homosassa to Sarasota)

55 miles out of Bayport in 75-85ft was the magic number for us. We started in 55ft with so much gumbo it made it impossible to hunt. Moved out to 75ft with TTB viz and loaded numbers. Final haul for the day was 40 mangs, 2 gags, 30 lionfish, 4 hogs, some nice grunts. I also lost about an 80lb king, he was just out of range and the spear didn’t penetrate. Dive computer stopped working on the second dive which resulted in me getting a small case of the bends. Joint and muscle paint in the left shoulder. We had five shooters on-board

Re: Current Vis - Tampa Bay Region (Homosassa to Sarasota)

Went out of Anna Maria yesterday. Water looked real good all the way out. 45' was ttb 56' was even better. We could see a jewfish swimming on bottom from the boat!. Got 2 permit 1 king 1 gag and 1 red grouper. Had 1 gag stole by a jewfish. All in all great day! What was really cool was my buddy seen a school of blackfin swim by while I was on bottom and the sharks behind them started swarming us! Things got serious!

(Buddy took gag home, that's why it's not in pic)
Pics of buddy was to show how clear it was...

He was a MONSTER - SnapperZilla! We couldn't believe it when the shooter brought him up - and one of my guys (Tim) shot and strung so many huge fish that we were wondering if he'd have enough buoyancy to make it to the surface!

BTW - I have a VERY large hand - here is my hand next to the ARS.

Congrats! Those are some uncommon fish in 56' this time of year. There's not much natural reef in that depth/area. Might I inquire what sort of structure you were diving on?

We were at a couple of ledges in 45-50 for the red, then we went out to Docs barge and got the rest. There was a trawler less than 1/4 mile from us for a while. I assume the blackfin were following it. We seen Bonita, a school of eagle rays, lots of AJ's... we also had a flasher rig set out over the barge. So I'm sure that helped with bringing a lot of stuff over the barge for us.

But I think since you don't have 500 posts yet, the rules are that the nomination must be ratified at a special biweekly meeting, normally by a simple majority in the case of purely internal affairs, but in this case by a two-thirds majority due to the nature of the award...

Tyson, For some reason, this made me laugh too! I accept your challenge to post at least 100 times each day for the next 5 days and will resubmit my nomination on Tuesday.
