Baja trip to Los Barriles advise???

Hey guys,

I did search, and saw good amount of info that are old.
Just wondering if you guys can give me some updated advice.

I am planning to go 12/22-12/26 to Los Barriles area.
I will be going with another dive buddy, and plan on one boat day.
Anyone else who can join us for a boat dive are welcome.

1. Where do you guys recommend staying, we will be with our wives. I was thinking Punta Pescadero, because it looks like we can dive right in front of the hotel. Any other recommendation or area will be greatly appreciate.

2. Any recommendation for boat guy? palapas ventana? pistorleros? chay?

3. Anything I should be worried about safety wise?

4. Any recommendation on renting a 4x4?

thanks,

Andy

Safety is good but dont leave valuables in plain sight. 4x4 not needed, any rental car will do. Palapas chay pistoleros they are all good depending on what you want but non are in los barriles so you might have to travel an hour drive. And if you aregoing to drive anyways, i suggest pacific side that time of year for better chances of pelagics..

I live in La paz. Let me know when the date gets closer and can talk more

That time of year is kitesurfing season on the Cortez. I doubt if the diving is any good at barilles or ventana as it is blowing nearly 20 knots every day. I was there last year in January kiting and it was howling. Pacific side is your best bet

Deng, does the wind pick up later in the afternoon, or is it like all day. Might have to just shore dive mornings and learn to kite surf. life gives you lemons, make lemonade.

what type of fish are available shore diving at punta pescadero?

The wind is low in the mornings most days, then by 10 or 11, it cranks up.

Around the reefs are cabrilla, barred pargo, and a few other pargo species; yellow snapper, some cubera snapper. Roosters are around, and possibly YT o the edges of reef to open water or drop-offs.

Possible grouper, likely sierra, parrots, other reef fish to varying degrees.

There are a few reefs north of town. Pisteleros and palapas are an hour+ drive north. Either is good but not the summer action. Yt can be found but mostly your looking at pargo, Sierra, grouper and reef fish. Bring your kite great time for it. Viz can be low due to wind but does clear up quick if wind dies for a day or two.
