Spoiler Alert:

"Everything is much better with MPAs and the Ocean is rebounding in an amazing way after years of devastating over-harvesting and abuse. We recommend extending the MPAs to cover the entire coastline of California.. etc."

This is going to be an interesting presentation on the Marine Protected Areas. Anyone interested should attend. This coming Thursday, March 24th, 4-6pm down at the harbor.

Sharing MPA Baseline Monitoring Reporting: March 20-24, 2017
Join California Department of Fish and Wildlife, Ocean Protection Council, and Ocean Science Trust to explore the State of the California South Coast.
Click here for an event flyer and here for the program - and thank you for sharing far and wide!

On March 13, the State of the California South Coast report will be released, providing a snapshot of the ecological and socioeconomic conditions at the time marine protected areas (MPA) in the region went into effect. To celebrate the release of this report and showcase key findings from this initial phase of monitoring, local ocean community members are invited to attend a series of community gatherings held throughout the South Coast (Pt. Conception to the California/Mexico border, including offshore islands) during the week of March 20-24.

These free events will be open to the diverse ocean community in the South Coast, including fishermen, California tribes and tribal communities, researchers, citizen scientists, educators, and others interested in monitoring, evaluation, and adaptive management of California’s MPAs and marine resources. At each community gathering, participants will:
• Learn about the status of MPA monitoring in the South Coast, including how baseline results will contribute to long-term monitoring and inform management;
• Review and discuss the soon-to-be released State of the California South Coast report, which provides a snapshot of local ecosystems and ocean activities;
• Engage with researchers, resource managers, citizen scientists, fishermen, and others actively involved in monitoring, and participate in decision making about our ocean.

South Coast Monitoring Survey and Dashboard

The South Coast Monitoring Survey and the California Coastal Monitoring Dashboard will help California Ocean Science Trust and its partners at the California Ocean Protection Council and California Department of Fish and Wildlife to:

* Determine the geographic and temporal coverage of monitoring activities inside and outside of South Coast MPAs

* Learn how those monitoring activities connect with metrics identified in the South Coast MPA Monitoring Plan

* Identify data gaps and overlaps in South Coast monitoring efforts

* Highlight opportunities for partnership and collaboration to leverage resources, avoid duplication of effort, expand the community of people and organizations involved in monitoring, and increase opportunities for monitoring results to inform processes around and beyond MPA management.

***### A bit of a rabbit-hole once you start looking at and exploring the Dashboard, but interesting to see what they're doing, attempting to do, and saying they're doing... ###***

Re: Santa Barbara Conditions Report "Perma-Thread"

8-10ft vis on the outer kelps in town. Just get past the ultramurky shallows and you'll find somewhat huntable conditions. New swell coming soon though.

Re: Santa Barbara Conditions Report "Perma-Thread"

Dove in town late this afternoon. Murky in the shallows but opened up a bit on the outside - about 10 ft at the surface, but very poor on the bottom as a new windswell started filling in. On a better note, saw a lot of sardines and some macks. No wsb though...

Re: Santa Barbara Conditions Report "Perma-Thread"

Pretty bad vis yesterday afternoon along town. 5-6 ft at the bottom, slightly better in less kelp-y areas, but still quite disappointing compared to what it looked like from the cliffs.
