Trip Report 12-30-2018
Ran 70 miles NW of Clearwater on Saturday for a quick overnight fishing and scuba shootin’ trip on a flat calm sea. The hook and line fishing Saturday night was very active with many 8 to 15 lb ARS hitting the deck. Unfortunately we had to throw them all back but it was a ton of fun catching them. A couple guys fished well into the night and managed to boat a half dozen nice Mango’s. I woke up about 7:30 and strolled out onto the back deck to find 4 or 5 nice Gags and a few more Mango’s on the deck.
We had stopped on some hard bottom on the way out and caught a variety of live baits that included a vary large 18” lizard fish. One of the guys threw that big boy on a hook and sent him down to see what may be interested. There was an immediate hit and soon a very nice 15lb Gag hit the deck. Mr. Lizard fish still looked pretty fresh so he sent him back down for an encore. Bang, another hit and Gag number 2 hits the deck. Mr. Lizard is pretty ragged by now but he fires him down again for a second encore. Yep, you guessed it.....bang, another immediate hit and soon Gag number 3 hits the deck minus Mr. Lizard. We caught several AJ’s in the 40 to 60 lb range, many, many more big ARS, and a bunch more Gags. At 9:45 AM we had our limit of Gags so we decided to send down a couple divers. Visibility was a concern as the pre-trip reports we had been getting were all saying vis was in the 5 ft. range. Plus it was very foggy. The divers reported 12ft. of vis but were still able to spear 6 very nice 3 to 6 lb Mango’s. We headed for home at 10:30 AM with a nice load of fish and very sore backs. Hook and Line fishing is hard work. It was a very good last trip of 2018 and all aboard were planning and anticipating a trip backup there when ARS and AJ open next year.

Nice trip! I'm going to have to try lizard fish for bait next time I catch them. Glad the weather cooperated just in time to finish the season!

Sounds like the water temp and vis is pretty consistent then. 10-15ft vis and 65F at surface 20-25 miles NW of Anclote. Sounds like a great trip and nice info that gags love lizard fish

Re: Trip Report 12-30-2018
Yeah, I was kinda surprised when he threw that lizard fish in the livewell because I never thought of them as being good Grouper bait. However, these winter time Gags were especially hungry after that 70 knot gale we had a week earlier.

Was it sent down live?
Those things are veracious. They routinely attack big plugs I troll that are about the same size as them.

Re: Trip Report 12-30-2018
Thanks for posting the pics Eric. The first picture I believe is mostly ARS that gathered under the boat while we were chumming/fishing. The second picture shows the fish show over the wreck. The third picture I think is a large school of Amberjack. It was a very fish spot and that is why I love winter time fishing and diving. That big 70 knot blow we had the previous week pushed those Gags to the wreck for cover from the storm.

Re: Trip Report 12-30-2018
Thanks, after taking 15 years off it’s nice to be back on (and under) the water. It’s been quite a journey for me this summer as I began the process of starting to dive and spearfish again after such a long layoff. Hopefully I can find the time to write it down and post it.
