ENT in Clearwater/Tampa area familiar with freedivers?
Spearos,
I've been struggling with ear issues more frequently and it's time to see a specialist. Not looking for a doctor to remove ear wax - already went down that road with an ENT. Looking for someone who understands the environment our ears are subjected to and how important it is for us to continue to dive. Hell, there might even be a diver in Otology in the group? Preferably in Clearwater/Tampa area. I'm having severe equalization issues midway through the dive day and that is unsat! Have had a variety of swimmer ear issues, but am most concerned with equalizing deficiencies, especially after a few hours of slinging steel. Thanks!

Hurry up and get that fixed. It would be nice to have a full-time boat driver and chum slinger, but you'll be missed in the water.

Re: ENT in Clearwater/Tampa area familiar with freedivers?
SHORT ANSWER:
Could be a lot of things. from the sounds of it is just congestion since you are fine at the beginning then middle way through your are having problems. Bring some afrin or deepsea saline solution and use it a few times during the day to keep you clear. LONG ANSWER: Im not a doctor, ENT, Otolaryngologists, scientist or voodoo shaman and in no form condone diving while congested as you are subjected to more serious risks/problems, such as perforated TMs or reverse squeeze. It is better to take a a few days off then a month because you perforated an ear drum. Even T1 or T2 type squeeze can cause severe pain. T3 would be blood coming from the ears and you would need to see a doctor. Or it could just be genetics. small eustachian tubes, sinus disease, all kinds of stuff can cause what you are describing. If your problem persists find a professional that has a background in hyperbaric medicine. or go to a hospital with a recompression treatment facility. The staff there should be knowledgeable in diving related injuries. SIMPLE ADVICE: make sure you are clearing the right way and not forcing it. stay ahead of the pressure and if it hurts stop. I can tell you from experience and two years of not diving because of an inner ear problem that it is not worth it. |

Re: ENT in Clearwater/Tampa area familiar with freedivers?
Seeing doc on Wed.
I took 600mg of Mucinex every 12 hrs for 4 days leading up to my dives yesterday. I noticed and improvement over previous trips, as I was able to dive about 6-7 hrs before noticing some slight clearing issues at the very end of the day. Made several drops to 75-80ft the first 2-3 hrs and many more in the late afternoon in 40ft. Some people are taking 1200mg every 12 hrs, but I wanted to ramp up if necessary later. I'll see what the ENT can determine moving forward. Thanks!
