Does Mid-West Floods influence viz in the Keys?
I have a two week trip, starting tomorrow, in the Marathon area.
Got my diving mate from the UK joining us. Towing the Panga down. BIG question is whether the extra dirty water from the flooding of the Gulf Rivers (Mississippi etc) wrap around the corner and up into Florida? How far does the dirty water stretch typically? Thanks, Mike. Last edited by florfreediver; 05-29-2019 at 07:49 AM. |

Re: Does Mid-West Floods influence viz in the Keys?
Water looked clear around the 7 Mile bridge this past weekend but I only snorkeled at Bahia Honda park(Atlantic side). Marathon dive sites usually have lower viz than i.e. Key Largo due to Gulf water passing through the bridge. However, I noticed sometimes the current is from the Atlantic side to the Gulf. I doubt the floods will affect viz; Mississippi river delta too far away and the gulf stream always brings in clear water. With that being said, I've done some very low viz diving (10-15 feet viz) in Marathon at Coffins Patch and Sombrero reef. Also, no rain means better viz, lately it's been mostly dry.

Re: Does Mid-West Floods influence viz in the Keys?
The viz in the lower keys has been pretty bad since easter. It's finally clear on the reef since the gulf stream pushed in recently.
I think the keys have really been getting slammed by all the nutrient rich water coming from upper florida.
