DIY float line for cheap

Supplies:
35' of 3/8OD pvc tubing (~$12) (homedepot)
40' of old kitesurfing line (free....any decent line should suffice)
(2) 5/16" 4"long Stainless steel bolts (~$1.50each, homedepot)
zipties or string

Take sewing string and send it through the pvc tubing. I used a vacuum cleaner. Use home supplies to create a seal at the vacuum end (I used a funnel). The string should go right through.

Tie string to your kite line and pull it through.

Make your own plugs. I used a hacksaw, grinder, and drill.

I tied the kite line to the plug using a bowline knot.

Shove the plug in. I used a ziptie over the pvc, where the plug has the indent. In hindsight, I would have tied a double constrictor knot.

Vuola. Thoughts? (I don't plan shooting pelagics with this. However, I would only upgrade the kite line if I did)

Re: DIY float line for cheap

Id seal up those zip ties with some heat shrink tubing if i were you.. I homebuilt my first floatline and it promptly filled with water the first dive thanks to not having a good seal on the plugs.

Can I ask what kind of drill bit you used? I used those cobalt bit from home depot and couldn't go through the bolt.
Thanks.

Re: DIY float line for cheap

I haven't been on the board in easily a year, and first day checking someone responded to my old thread.

regular old bit. I did use a hammer and nail to indent a starting point.
