Eric, I went to HP 100s last year. Love them, longer bottom time and you can ditch 7 lbs of weight.

Re: Looking to buy used Steel 100+ HP tanks

I already use neutrally buoyant tanks (about 6 extra pounds) - so I wouldn't be needing to adjust at all to the weight of a 100, which is nice.

Now the question is do I go 100 HP or get 112 LPs ? I'm getting different opinions on both.

Re: Looking to buy used Steel 100+ HP tanks

So, I am a fan of the LP112 and here is why.

Faber states they can be cycled at a minimum of 10,000 fills to 4,000 psi. Overfilling low pressure tanks is an everyday common practice in North Florida cave country and at most tech/cave diving shops. Never has a tank failed.

It's my understanding from a metallurgy perspective this is safe and the issue is more about the DOT regs and not the tank itself. My shop is geared more toward technical/cave diving so they will give me a "cave" fill on my tanks. If I were doing a pinnacle dive and needed the gas they will give me up to a 4k fill, 170 cu ft. I normally get fills to 3500 psi. If my tanks are filled to 3500 psi that gives me ~150 cubic feet of gas. Nearly two aluminum 80's and of course 50 more cubes than a HP100. The downside to the 112's is they are slightly larger in diameter, 8 inches instead of 7.25. The 112's are two inches taller and weigh 6 lbs. more. Buoyancy wise, they have nearly the same characteristics. Negative 8 full, negative 1 empty. Price wise they are about the same.

So, at the end of the day there are many shops in Florida and around the Bay area that will give you good fills. Perhaps one day one of us buys a compressor or a group of us buys one and we fill our own tanks. Owning a LP112 vs. a HP100 gives you more utility. You really can't overfill a HP100 for any kind of benefit. If you have a really good SAC rate you could potentially bring just one LP112 for a two dive trip. If you are doing a Middle Grounds trip where tanks are at a premium, you can squeak out another dive from a LP112 vs a HP100. Basically, you have a lot more options with the LP 112 vs. a HP100.

I don't think there is a wrong answer here, just personally preference. Some people won't overfill a tank. If you don't have any shops to get a good fill it may not be worth the extra bulk in the tank. One thing is for sure, steel is the way to go. Those tanks will likely outlive us all.

Eric, I have 8x LP112's and will be happy to bring a spare on a trip so you can dive it and see how it trims out and see what kind of dive times you'll get.

Is this still true? I know that this was the "word on the street" a decade ago, but I went to faber's website and it says not to overfill. I called a dive shop down in FLA and they said that they could only overfill by 10%.

I ask because I'm looking for new tanks, so wondering if I should stick with the LP108's.

Re: Looking to buy used Steel 100+ HP tanks

I get my 108 tanks overfilled every time, I typically have 2800 to 3200,
I personally prefer them over any other size. I know a lot of people going to 120 hp, but I always been with 108 and have no reason to change. I typically get 30 minutes on nitrox with them each tank.

faber now makes the "same' tanks with a 3500 psi rating... 34XX psi or something. I assume they are a different alloy and maybe a little heavier, but I really can't tell much difference between the LP (2400 psi) and the 3500 psi tanks. They have identical dimensions.

Faber now has the new hot dipped galvanized tanks with the 3500 rating. I have one of them and just started using it. I also have a couple hot dipped LP 85 cu-ft that the shop will generally fill to around 2900 for me. Can't yet tell if the new hot dipped is better than painted.

I don't know if something has changed. Here's eight years of debate with posts as recent as today. I'm a 108 fan. My shop has no problem jacking them up. I have the older grey painted tanks.
