Try cellophane instead of aluminum foil. It doesn't stick to the epoxy.

Re: First gun build, thoughts and pics

I found a jointer on craigslist for $200. Older but still works great. Feeler gauges show the tables are coplaner. Jointed my practice blank and then broke down and bought a dewalt tabletop planer. Kind of a bit much for one speargun but I have a feeling I will use them.

Those things are sweet.

See, you say "for one speargun," but we have all said that. This is for ONE speargun before you make the NEXT speargun. 90% of the guys who have made their own gun will tell you they have made more than one. You screwed yourself. I'm sure heroin addicts thought they'd only shoot up once too. You'll be making more. Especially after investing in some more tools. You'll just try to find an excuse to use them.

I think the jointer was a huge score. I had to shim the infeed table to get it coplaner but its dead nuts now, just have to work on my technique. Wood projects have always been intimidating, you go to home depot and look at the lumber, its horrifying. These tools have shed a new light.

That is exactly the word for it. I was there yesterday to get some 1/2" plywood. I walked out empty handed. It looks like they found their stock abandoned in a swamp somewhere.

Re: First gun build, thoughts and pics

Last night I had a chance after work to make some progress. I had to adjust the tables on the planer as they were tipped up quite a bit from the factory. When i sent the mahogany through it came out incredibly smooth! This thing is amazing! Then I sanded the finish off with a palm sander and vacuumed the hell out of the laminates to prep for epoxy. I mixed a cup of 8oz. and then mixed in the filler to mayo consistency. Also mixed a cup of 4oz. of non-filler to wet first. I also had another 4oz. worth of resin and hardener measured out but not mixed in case i ran short. For 5 laminates about 65", this was about right, had a few oz. left over, better than running out part way through.

Blank is out of the clamps. I think I read somewhere that you should wait 5 or 6 days before machining with jointer/planer for the epoxy to fully cure. Then I will have to decide wether to put my "T" on the top or bottom. This should give me a final size of about 2" tall, 2.5" wide.

Re: First gun build, thoughts and pics

try to take out the extra epoxy after clamping ,it need more time to clean once it dry and it s hard for the planer

T on the bottom, not the top. T on the top will have the track running down the middle.

I let mine sit for 7 days minimum.

Re: First gun build, thoughts and pics

Cool thread. Nice score on the Jointer. Those things can kick so you need to review the protocol. Jointer and planer can be a little repetitive. Thickness sander would be nice. But if you can master the jointer there's some cool things you can do with it like Tapers.

Up here.. with this crap weather, you need to let that Epoxy cure a bit, maybe bring in the house for a few days. The ideal is to put an eyescrew dead center on the end of the blank and let it hang. Let it hang a few days for the Epoxy to cure. Then run it and then let it hang as long as you can. The longer the better. Then recheck for straightness. There's a real good woodshop in southern mass. I forget the name but if you search for lumber you'll find it. I think Kevin Sheets goes there sometimes.

Re: First gun build, thoughts and pics

Thanks Jon, Im back and forth to my garage, spare bedroom and basement, but the blank is currently hanging inside. Ive learned one thing so far, if you dont have friends with the right tools plan on spending some money. Im OK with it, I'll use them for other things and probably other guns too. I will look around for that wood shop.

Re: First gun build, thoughts and pics

Before and after the jointer/planer. A lot of epoxy on the bottom side but I really layed it on thick. I think the joints are good, just more I had to get off, which I did with a belt sander. Definitely need a mask with hepa filters for that, microfibers everywhere. I got it to within .0020" with the jointer then hand planned perfectly flat, then through the thickness planner.

Hopefully tomorrow I can get the T epoxied on.
