Unhappy “The Clock Is Ticking”: Inside the Worst U.S. Maritime Disaster in Decades

This article is a long read, but it is truly fascinating and tragic.

“The Clock Is Ticking”: Inside the Worst U.S. Maritime Disaster in Decades | Vanity Fair 4-4-18

FROM THE ARTICLE
Davidson said, “O.K. I just wanted to give you that courtesy so you wouldn’t be blindsided by it, and have the opportunity. Everybody’s safe right now. We’re in survival mode now.”

Re: “The Clock Is Ticking”: Inside the Worst U.S. Maritime Disaster in Decades

It was very interesting. The guy drove straight into a Cat 3 storm moving 6 mph when he could run 20 mph. It was, and still is, hard to imagine.

I also found the description somewhat lacking in a discussion of the listing. They make it seem like the captain was assuming that the listing was primarily caused by the wind on the beam. But wouldn't there be all kinds of alarms going off and decent information to quantify the amount of water they had taken on - which was causing the listing?

I also am curious about the listing causing the engines to shut down. That seems like a very serious vulnerability. Would/should the captain have known that and considered that danger as the ship started to list? Wouldn't you try to "fix" it before it came critical? Also, wouldn't you back down the throttle when driving into 120 mph winds or just turn and run away at 12 kts or something?

As I read the description, he just kept the hammer down and tried to run straight into it when it got bad?

I can't get the article to load on my computer for whatever reason. It's probably written in a more accessible way than the marine boards, but here is a link to the entire document of the marine boards report that was finally released last September, if anyone wants to see it.

PDF of the Marine Boards report on the sinking of the El Faro

As with most incidences like this the cocktail of failure is repetitively human in nature 99% of the time. Good read but very disturbing.
