Like I said, I understand there needs to be another option in this particular fish category since aj are closed. The part that seems unfair is east coast can shoot aj and cobia only. West coast can shoot cobia, cuda, permit, pompano. How does replacing 1 fish with 3 even the playing field?

Hi Kelly,

East Coast contestants can shoot Permit and Pompano under these rules. They just have to weigh it in as a Wild Card Fish because they get to shoot Amberjack on the East Coast.

Giving West coast shooters only barracuda does not make up for the typical size differential of many amberjack exceeding 20 pounds. As you know, 20 pounds is 20 points which is the maximum points available for the AJ/Cobia category.

Therefore, we gave West Coast the permit and Pompano in the AJ category. But you as an east coast shooter can still bring in a permit or Pompano in the Wild Card Category. There are also FWC rules about state waters for permit and Pompano that must be followed everywhere.

Here is the exact wording of this BBO rule.

COBIA OR JACK CATEGORY - Only one cobia or jack is allowed. Species of legal jacks eligible for

this category might include Amberjack, Yellow Jack, Almaco Jack, etc. that are legal to harvest in federal or state waters where you are hunting.

Because Amberjack is closed in the Gulf at the time of the tournament, we will allow (for this year only) the optional weigh-in of a barracuda in this category for West Coast registered shooters only.

WILD CARD CATEGORY – This category is designed to level the playing field due to grouper and snapper closures in various regions. Your wild card fish can be a barracuda or any fish now eligible in the above categories except you may weigh in only one gag grouper or black grouper total in order to comply with the East Coast possession limit where the weigh-in is located.

West Coast Registered Shooters have a maximum number of two barracuda that can be weighed in for all categories and East Coast Registered Shooters have a maximum number of one barracuda as the Wild Card Fish.

However, in lieu of barracuda, Permit or Pompano may be weighed in the Cobia or Jacks Category for West Coast Registered Shooters and may be weighed in only in the Wild Card Category for East Coast Registered Shooters. Contestants who weigh in barracuda (or any other fish) have the option of donating them to scientists for research.

Thanks for asking the question, Tony

So that means if someone showed up on Sunday they wouldn't be able to still enter the comp that day?

exactly, if everyone could wait until the end of Saturday to see if their catch is worth entering there wouldn't be enough entries to support the tournament
