I would stray away from mine shafts. Rarely are they straight down and they can have many hazards such as wire mesh, ropes, rebar, and some pretty toxic stuff like arsenic in the water. Also it is easy to have visibility go to 0.
Look for a pool that allows you to use long fins and do laps. |

Re: DIY----Dive hole/training pool?
I was thinking the design not a accual mine shaft, all valid points you made.
Not thought out ideas that I went thru last night was taking a grain silo 30'-50' and sticking it in the ground....maybe linking one or linking two semi trailors the 40' ers and same idea etc I know the trailors would provide more support but wouldnt be a long term endevor due to rust/decay etc.... And of course the hardest part for me to figure....once you get 20'+...best method of controled soil removal....while maintaning the edge/lip and the list goes on from there. Just for the record this is a place to toss around ideas...I am not planning on going thru with this asap its just for thinking, talking about the idea...becouse someday it would ROCK to have your own training pit.

There is no lakes in central oregon? Crazy idea, I hope your desing can come through...I would be interested to see it.....there is a training facility in a land locked country in europe that has a crazy design......its worth millions, but it would be worth taking a look at...

Hmmm.. that sounds like an interesting endevour. I dont know any specifics, I am sure there are some good ways to do it with good filtration and some good sealing so groundwater and dirt does not seep in. It would be pretty expensive to dig a deep hole though.

Re: DIY----Dive hole/training pool?
I have seen pools like that above and below ground. If you got the money and/or the time it can be done. I've always wanted to have one in my yard. GOod luck!

Re: DIY----Dive hole/training pool?
My concern wouldn't be the lack of lakes in Central Oregon because there are plenty of man made ones. My concern would be soul depth there. It turns into rock really fast and that would make it cost prohibitive. You would almost be better making a concrete cylinder that stuck most of the way out of the ground that had a 15 degree to the vertical wall to support the weight... interesting idea though. This is more of what I am thinking of:

Re: DIY----Dive hole/training pool?
if you've ever looked at the tanks they use for fuel under gas stations i think those would work, they are fiberglass, i know a guy who got four of them and has turned one into a grain bin. buried another for storm/invasion protection. and is considering raising tilapia in the other two cut in half horizontally.. just an idea
