Re: SLO Dive Conditions

Out of PSL, just heard from a buddy who limited salmon by noon.

Working on the beach this morning, there were piles and piles of washed up krill. Also tons of salps. The ocean is going off right now, and we are looking at a productive year if this keeps up.

Get out there before the wind swell ruins everything tomorrow.

By Friday afternoon 32- to 46-mph winds.
These winds will generate 6 to 8 foot (310-degree deep-water) sea and swell (with a 5- to 13-second period) on Friday afternoon and will continue at this height and period through Saturday.

Re: SLO Dive Conditions

Water has greened up a bit from yesterday. Still looked decent by the Poly pier. I could see the bottom close in, but the increased swell and wind should change that.

It is time to start looking for flatties though.

Re: SLO Dive Conditions

Fished salmon at PSL today for a couple hours and couldnt connect with anything. Great to be on the water. Vis looked 10ish in port. Should be Halis anytime.

Re: SLO Dive Conditions

It sounds like they are still getting salmon pretty wide open out of PSL. I heard from a friend who tried Morro today for nothing too. Bummer it can't be good everywhere. The commercial boats have been doing well, if you believe the reports.

Still, I am looking forward to those flatties coming in. I would much rather shoot a halibut, than reel in a salmon (not that I would grumble about either).

Re: SLO Dive Conditions

is this report used much?
http://www.tenera.com/weather/

Specifically this:

"SEAWATER VISIBILITY:

Seawater visibility was 32-feet (top to bottom) at the
Diablo Canyon Intake. "

Re: SLO Dive Conditions

I use it everytime I dive local. One of the best for local conditions. Don't count on other local areas to have the same vis as Diablo though.

Re: SLO Dive Conditions

John Lindsay is local and has been diving for 30 plus years.

He also has a background in weather reporting...which possibly includes the water visability...at the Canyon.

Re: SLO Dive Conditions

I am going to be down there next Thursday, 5-10, for a meeting and want to dive afterwards if conditions allow. I could use a guide, so if anyone wants to try to get out in the afternoon, let me know.

I might be interested, depending on the conditions. What do you want to hunt? Free or scuba? The extended forecast has some wind, may need to tuck in someplace.

Re: SLO Dive Conditions

I drove all the way up to Andrew Molera, Big Sur, today (not to dive). Swell was way up, wind was cranking, and the vis was shot just about everywhere. If you are thinking of checking it out up there, wait for this wind and swell to die down.

Re: SLO Dive Conditions

I was planning to freedive. I don't have much experience in that area so I was just going to see what's up. I saw that the swell was going to be up next week. I'll pack the gear just in case.

The guns you produce appear to be ideally suited for the central coast..why don't you bring a representative sample with you?

If it is blown out- which it often is..or big surf which we often have-You and those interested could meet at a pre-determined location and time to "talk guns" as Wally Potts always said.

I would suggest the Pismo Beach pier area - generally plenty of parking -$$$$- but with tables, rest rooms, eating establishments, a lovely view and always a breeze.
