Parrot fish
Please forgive me if I'm posting this in the wrong area. I am in the Marshall Islands and wondering if it is respectable to spear parrot fish here. I see pics in the gallery and the local Marshalese say they are great table fare. I'm pretty sure the locals target them. Back where I come from was under the impression that they are tropicals. I always pass on them in search of snapper and grouper etc. Need advice for an Americano trying to respect local customs and culture. Thanks

Re: Parrot fish
I'm sure that it will be well respected and appreciated by the local Marshalese if you poke some Parrot fish. Some people find them to be real good eating. I know some good spearo's who rave about them steamed. Me, personally I would guess that there's something better eating waiting for you, but when you are hunting for your own food, you take what you can catch.

Re: Parrot fish
POKE EM BRAH!...if you can. You can tell if the locals spear em by how bold or elusive they are when you're in the water. They are excellent eating, especially the females (red/rust color). They are onolicius steamed, but washed with a coconut milk/egg wash and rolled in panko (Japanese bread crumbs) and fried golden brown in coconut oil just til barely cooked these buggahs stay moist and soft and perfect for fish tacos!!! In Hawai'i they fetch a high price when sold at market, I've shot uhu (parrot fish) in Baja where they use em for fish tacos, and shot em in Bahamas with pole spears where some eat em and some don't. The meat on the Uhu stay very tender and moist so even when fried make an excellent meal! Kama'aina here in Hawaii stuff em with Lopchong (chinese sausage), mayo, and green onion and steam em...also onolicious! So yeah, POKE EM BRAH!

Re: Parrot fish
Parrot fish are a favorite in the south pacific for the locals. Some folks say they are too pretty to shoot but that could be said about the Mahimahi those same folks happily eat at Red-lobster.
I shoot them, they are a plentiful and good eating fish in Tonga.
