Diving buddy needed Catalina Midweek

So here is the deal.
The weather according to Sailflo appears to be pretty ideal to dive for fish and bugs at Catalina. I am proposing three days diving and two overnights at the Island Maybe an additional day and night if everything is just right. We share all expenses. Launch out of Huntington Beach. My boat is a Scout 22 ft Dorado with a Yamaha 225. The boat and I have been to Catalina a few times, but I am not the most experienced mariner. The boat is very seaworthy, but the deck is less than ideal for overnight accommodations.
This is not Leave saturday and be back Sunday.
I am located in Fresno so someone from my area would be great, as we could share the full experience, but it is not necessary.
Send me a message and we can discuss the possible dates, and other specifics.

Thanks Vincent

Re: Diving buddy needed Catalina Midweek

Like he said....Santa Ana high winds blowing to sea predicted for the next 4 days or so...rough as a cob on the front side currently...backside could be flat as glass...suggest switching to NOAA weather site where you can click on the specific area marine weather between mainland and Catalina....constant south wind/swell from Mexico hurricanes mixed with usual west/northwest winds we have, has created weeks of choppy water to navigate...Avalon harbor may be rough, as Santa Anas blow directly into the harbor mouth. Best bet might be going around the back and staying in Cat Harbor overnite….Don't try to anchor overnite at the frontside Isthmus area in high winds, as pulled anchors are common (usually at 3 a.m. with a pitch black nite) unless you know the areas..I know the spots well and have been blown off more than once....Me, I rent a mooring these days ($28) to ensure a good night's sleep....

...Best launching areas are Davies in Long Beach at P.C.H. and 2nd street or Sunset Marina in Huntington Beach Harbor, both, about a 22 to 24 mile run across..also, the Isthmus Harbor area has a pay for several nites and get two nights free deal, if that works for you..

Re: Diving buddy needed Catalina Midweek

Thanks for the great information Bob. My tentative plan is for late this week/ early next week and launching out of Sunset Harbor, Overnighting at Cat Harbor and diving the backside, but it all depends on the forecasts, and then what is really going on. I appreciate your knowledge and wisdom. Feel free to PM me with other info that is too sensitive for the general public. My ocean going experience is pretty limited, so I need all the help that I can get.

Re: Diving buddy needed Catalina Midweek

Ironically, this morning was flat as glass...N/W winds canceled out the S/E Santa Anas for lake-like conditions. While walking the Long Beach bluff, wife and I could see the creases in the mountains clearly at the island.. Afternoon, it kicked off again straight out to sea, making for rough going in the channel.. Still, Fall produces some great chances to land a big gamefish and the tuna are still here....the gas dock by the Sunset bridge is now open until 5 p.m., but, probably around $5 a gallon compared to $4 or less at Von's...
