Training Advice
Hey guys, I've only been freediving for about a year now and have some questions about pool training.
Right now I go to an Olympic size pool (25 yards long, 12' deep) and do the following exercises wearing my wetsuit, mask, snorkel, and weights no fins (pool rules) #1 Submerge, swim directly to the bottom, swim along the bottom 25-35' pause for 20-45 seconds, turn around and return to start. This way I usually hit between 1:20 to 1:40 down times. #2 submerge, swim directly to the bottom, swim along the bottom the length of the pool, until I have to surface. Usually I can make it 65ft or so before I have to surface, my average down time with this exercise is 1:00 - 1:15. #3 exhaling all air from my lungs, submerge and swim a far as I can before surfacing. Never timed this exercise because I'm just teachin myself to push past cheat contractions. Above water I can do 3:00 breath holds, and easily push past cheat contractions. Underwater I cannot get myself to push past cheat contractions. My goal is to get where k can freedice to 60' spearfish and return to the surface safely. What exercises do you guys do? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. |

Re: Training Advice
are you doing this with a safety diver in the pool watching you?

Re: Training Advice
A 12' deep olympic sized pool where they let you wear a wet suit and weights? Damn, you are a lucky bastard.

Re: Training Advice
No safety diver in the pool, but I inform the lifeguard of what I'm doing and the keep a close eye on me since the other people are just swimming laps.
I kinda had to talk them into letting me wear weights and my snorkel. They didn't have a problem with the wetsuit and mask. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Training Advice
A lifeguard is a false sense of security. But they WILL get your body off of the bottom of the pool by the end of their shift.
You need another diver in the pool with a mask that knows proper safety and rescue techniques and warning signs to look for (release of air, uncoordinated motions, etc) If you blackout... You have :45 sec to 1:00 min to get your airway above water before you take your next / last gasp. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Re: Training Advice
In the California section there is a long thread Hayduke posted earlier this year asking about training. There is a lot of stuff in there.
I train in pools all the time, was a former competitive swimmer, have a Guinness world record for apnea and multiple US National wins for freediving, both pool and ocean, hunt regularly at past 120' here in California in other waters. What you are doing is not safe, especially the exhale stuff. Also I think if you are training to spear you could lose the weights and snorkel/mask, you'd get more benefit from training in just fins and goggles, loom at traditional interval based swim workouts. For spearo conditioning for ocean, taking all that stuff in a pool is like wearing training wheels.

Re: Training Advice
It is NOT the life guards job to safety spot individual swimmers. He/she is supposed to be scanning the pool. Most of the guards at my pool are bored youngsters and they spend most of their time chatting with their friends. For freedive training you must have a buddy right there with you for your entire dive.

Re: Training Advice
The lifeguard/pool needs to be re-trained regarding safety measurers...
