First run
Here's a few pics from the first trip out in my project boat, a 22' Boston Whaler Guardian. This is a former Navy boat I picked up from a GSA auction last year, it was definately used and abused by some fine young boat operators. Very happy with the ride, and performance of the boat. The dive door is worth every penny, and we all even put some blood on the deck! Cruised at 20-25knts and topped out over 40 in the bay! Wish I had that C130 available for easy access to those remote dive locations. We dove some paddies about 20 miles west of Mission Bay, holding lots of bait and yellowtail.

Re: First run
Hey Jeff,
You can pick them up from GSA auction websites now and then, I paid under 7000 for this, with the trailer and outboards... .50cal not included. It's a great fixer upper, you can check them out before bidding on them in most cases. These were located in San Diego at the Navy shipyard, but I've seen some awesome patrol boats up for auction which law enforcement use on lakes and rivers, especially in Nevada.

Re: First run
So far, I've got about 3000 into it, and ALOT of hours (about a years worth). I did most of the work myself so it ain't pretty, but it works. I have an outboard mechanic who is very familiar with the engines and installed impeller kits on both engines and traced a minor electrical issue on one motor. I was pleasantly surprised they ran as well as they did for being dormant so long, and the compression on both are very good. More than half the money I put into it was getting it and the trailer registered, and having a new 100 gallon fuel tank made (looking for dive/fuel buddies), the 88 gallon tank it had was full of mud and water so I pulled it. Here's a pic of what you are typically starting with...this is not mine, but same type condition.
Since I was limited on funding available from Congress (wife), I had to come up with another means to appropriate project funding, so I started selling costumes and costume parts...most all the money for the boat and retrofit came from this....at least that's what I tell her.

Re: First run
Wow, thanks for the info.
I tell ya, going out with Bill I get pretty spoiled with the cabin and hot shower, but I really would love to have a boat like yours someday. Hopefully sooner than later. That really sounds like a great deal and a little work into it just makes you appreciate all the more. I'm sure you'll have fish all over it for years to come!! Congrats Jeff Bonisa San Clemente |

Re: First run
You gotta love being able to slide aboard Shamu style. Good work on the Guardian. I've seen those at GSA auctions and you're right, those fine young men beat the cr*p out of them. Solid boat, though.
Oh, and nice work on the yellows! |
