All About Pole Spears & Slings What is it about that traditional method of the early hunter/gatherers under the water? These devices are indeed interesting and effective. |

Any kind of trigger mechanism for a sling spear?
Is there any kind of a device out there that allows you to swim around with your sling spear cocked and loaded and which can be released instantly via some kind of trigger mechanism? I know that you can buy / make a Loading Rest, but it looks like you still have to manually disengage the rest to fire off the shot. I'd prefer some sort of quicker trigger mechanism.
Spearguns you can swim with them cocked and loaded and when you see a fish all you have to do is point and pull the trigger. But I like travelling with a pole spear because they're so much more compact, light, and simple. But I miss being able to swim around with the spear completely ready to go and fired with the pull of a trigger. It can be tiring on the hand to swim around with the band always cocked and if you don't do that, you can miss a fish during the time it takes you to cock the band. |

Re: Any kind of trigger mechanism for a sling spear?
Sometimes it is a matter of legislation. Pole spears and slings are legal, while any speargun is not. And the difference that separates the guns from the other devices is the existence of a trigger that allows the device to stay cocked untill it is actuated.
I don't think a simple single band speargun is going to be such a problem while traveling. there isn't really much to go wrong with guns either. |

Re: Any kind of trigger mechanism for a sling spear?
I have exactly what you're looking for, it's called a "Hawaiian Dart" It is basically a Hawaiian sling with a trigger. I have a coil bungee attached to the spear since I have used it in less than ideal viz, but it can easily be removed and use as a simple sling. I no longer use it and it can be yours for $50 + shipping. PM me if you're interested.

"Sea Hornet" made what they called a handspear gun that was what you are looking for. A picture from their catalog is attached.

Re: Any kind of trigger mechanism for a sling spear?
There is also a "rip-off" version from Asia, you can see it here.
http://www.speargun.com.au/spear/han...grip/index.htm The trigger mechanism is of the friction type using in a sense a tilting washer, although here it is more of a metal ring or band. Pulling the trigger straightens the ring up so that the polespear can slide right through it. This is virtually a clone of the "Sea Hornet" sliding grip handle which was also offered for a time by AB Biller in the USA. |

Another type of trigger controlled pole spear shooter is described here.

Re: Any kind of trigger mechanism for a sling spear?
I posted these Pictures a while ago. Think it a Request from Aaron Crist.
This is an old Pole concept, an upgrade to the design could be done. This is a Trigger mechanism, no wiggle room in gray area of Regulations where it's banned , as the Loop , Hold , Rest concept slips through most of the time.

Re: Any kind of trigger mechanism for a sling spear?
Just chanced on this fibreglass pole spear from Taiwan made under the "A-Jiou" brand name. The trigger operates by hooking over a small washer which means the draw is fixed, however that is not really a problem as you usually cock these things to about half-way distance on the pole. Can be used with more than one band.

Something a little less flimsy than the unit above and made in Ukraine, not Asia. Uses a hinge trigger. About 120 bucks plus shipping.
