For those who go after both scallop and flounder, there isn't a better descaler for flounder than a reasonably fresh bay scallop shell. The shell edge ridges have the correct spacing to get under the rear edge of the flounder's small scales. Take a bucket of the shells home and find an a large ant colony to clean them. Each shell half is good for 3-5 flatfish before the edge starts to dull. Then discard the dull one and grab another one.
We would you want to scale a flounder?
Scalloping is great off hernando n southern citrus. Do not eat the funny color ones off crystal river. They closed the nuclear power plant there cause it had a leak. It's gonna take 30 years to decommission?!
So if you don't want your grandchildren to have 3 eyes n one ear stay to the south.

Re: Crystal River Scallop Grounds

What about the steinhatchee area? We are here now and the scallops are gone! Have been out for a few hours each day (between all the rain). Have headed south out of the channel about 4-5 miles on the flats and its like everything is picked over already. Unless we just arent in the right spot with all the other boats. I feel like we shouldve came earlier. Maybe crystal river area next year??

Re: Crystal River Scallop Grounds

Keaton first yesterday, no scallops between 4 of us. Tried at least 10 different spots in 3ft - 7ft. FWC said no one was really getting any up there because of the heavy rains. The water tasted like brackish water, very strange.

Loaded up and went to Steinhatchee, went North toward Big Grassy, got maybe two gallons in 45 mins between 4 of us. Scallops were hard to find but they were there. Water was much saltier.

Some friends went out of Horseshoe and almost got their limit of 10 gallons.

Re: Crystal River Scallop Grounds

We're going up tomorrow (Friday) early. Only weekend before kids go back to college.

Staying at the Plantation.

Hopefully the weather won't be too bad. There's always the springs, and beer.

Re: Crystal River Scallop Grounds

Just got back from a week in Homosassa. Way more scallops than last year when we were there. Got our limit each day in as quick as an hour. Had to dump my wife's bag back one day. She was not happy.

We had a blast... The kids can't get enough scalloping.

Re: Crystal River Scallop Grounds

Went to Crystal River yesterday. Pack of boats south of Gomez rocks......good weather until the afternoon. Scallops were spread out but good sized.

Re: Crystal River Scallop Grounds

I'm heading to Sarasota the 20th of September never been scalloping but thought I might stop by on the way down and give it a shot. How far out are the scallops will I need a boat? Will there be anything left by that time will it even be worth making the detour? Thanks.
