Costa Rica - Nosara/Guanacaste Region

I am heading down to Costa Rica, Nosara specifically, from August 7-14th. I know its not the best time of the year for visibility, but I was wondering if anyone has any idea whether there's at least enough viz to hunt the reefs for dinner.

Also, if anyone is going to be in the area around this time, I'm trying to set up a trip with Michael at Spearfishing Costa Rica to go hunt blue water for yellow-fin tuna, dorado, and all kinds of deliciousness. Just trying to find a way to split boat fees.

Any info is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
John

Hi John I ll be around montezuman at the same time.
Unfortunately August is not the perfect time for diving they got some rain already shore diving will be tough
we might be lucky of shore though I won t mind splitting a boat around there but a descent 25 footer with electronics goes for $600 a day! That s what we paid in quepos anyway...feel free to email me at snoel2006@ gmail.com

Yeah, hopefully I'll be lucky and find a spot with enough vis to at least snag a few fish near the shore.

I'd be down to split a boat, even though its pricey. I know its the rainy season, but it's also the perfect time of year for Yellowfin Tuna and Wahoo. In my book would be worth a good amount of money to split a boat. I'll email you when I start to figure my plans out and maybe we can come up with the money to split a boat.

inshore hunting in murky waters
offshore green water and bad visi
have to be carrefull with bulls patrolling along the beaches after heavy rain!

Re: Costa Rica - Nosara/Guanacaste Region

Thanks for the update Virgili! I'll try not to let my gf find out about the bull sharks, though, or she won't even get in the water.

Do you have any idea how far offshore you go for decent vis in blue water hunting?

Also, Sebastian, I found a charter Captain who charges around $600 or $650 (just like you thought) to take people offshore to chase tuna and wahoo with a big boat/electronic setup. Still looking to see if I can find another person, splitting the boat three ways would be great, 200+ would be a steal to get out there for tuna.

take people offshore to chase tuna ...
you may find blue water there only from dec to february and sometimes only at about 30 miles off the coast..
tuna spotting off nicoya needs to be pretty lucky
tuna get out fished because of huge asian net fishing boat patrolling off the central america pacific caost for the last years and longline fishing is the cherry on the top!
a doublé made far offshore years ago...

Yeah, I figured tuna was a long shot, but I've heard it's the right time of year for wahoo, sailfish, and marlin. Are you saying the Vis is so bad this time of year that it's not worth goin, even if you're 20+ miles off shore?
