Talking Dive Report La Jolla

Hey everyone I'm still a bit new but thought I'd start posting and sharing!

I went to dive with a buddy I met on here, I don't want to point him out unless he's okay with it. We went to La Jolla and it was one of the most beautiful days and the clearest waters I've ever seen! Visibility was at least 20 feet probably even up to 30!

We saw loads of perch, opaleye, a bunch of undersized bass, rays / guitarfarish, a jelly fish. I even encountered a sea lion! Which by the way scared the crap out of me.

My buddy got a huge calico bass ( at least I think it was a calico, he's welcome to post here for clarification and the actual size ). I speared a sculpin which could be a cabezon ( If you guys can identify it then let me know! ). It's 16 inches so even if it was a cabezon he was legal.

Here's some pictures and an editted video less than 3 minutes long. I hope you enjoy it!

I don't see how you got the impression that I think a calico bass is an opaleye; I have an opaleye properly labeled in the video.

I didn't even shoot the bass my dive buddy did so I don't have any images of it!

I think it's a cabezon too. Well cabezons are part of the sculpin family anyways.. ( right? )

Very nice man. I bet you are on top of the world right now.
I haven't seen a cab in years. Great eating.

Re: Dive Report La Jolla

So when I was cleaning the Cabezon I came across dozens of worms. Some were in the 10"+ range. Is that normal for a Cab? Are Cabs wormy fish in general or did I get a really infested one?

I pulled out over a dozen from each top shoulder area of the fish, the collar area. They're grouped up in a hole where the pectoral fin ends. It was weird pulling out large clumps. There was some in the gut area too but not as much as the pectoral fin areas though.

Look at that thing..

Re: Dive Report La Jolla

I hung out on top of an 18+ inch cab last week. Passed on him, and a handful of nice 15" scorpionfish. A few years ago I would have been stoked on them for some tacos.
