All About Pole Spears & Slings What is it about that traditional method of the early hunter/gatherers under the water? These devices are indeed interesting and effective. |

JBL Pole Spear Modification
Hello all,
Just got started using a pole spear for panfish in here Wisconsin. After following some of the threads about the JBL pole spear and talking with Aaron Crist, I made this change to my spear. I now have the ability to change bands in no time at all. I like the way it looks better than the original as well. Thanks to folks like Aaron and others on this board a newbie like myself can get some real good help and information. Here is a before and an after picture of my new pole. rudyc |

Jim,
It was turned out of round aluminum bar stock on a lathe. rudyc Last edited by rudyc; 10-04-2011 at 08:02 AM. |

Re: JBL Pole Spear Modification
I want one!
Are they heavy? I think that some mass at the tail of these spears would help with accuracy... Any ways, make more and we will buy the, Mike

Re: JBL Pole Spear Modification
I've made some out of stainless and aluminum. Don't get too carried away with length if making them in stainless. I made one in SS that had a total length of 4" and it was too heavy at the rear, made the spear shoot funky. Something in the 2" - 2.5" range works well.
Someone that knows the owner of JBL should really tell him about these mods. This is such a simple addition to their spear and really lets the end user change out the band in a snap, not the typical afternoon

Re: JBL Pole Spear Modification
Forgot to weigh the insert before the install. It's not much as it's aluminum.
Many thanks to Aaron Crist for the idea and his help with the design. It works just as advertised. I have only used the spear on panfish (Yellow Perch, Crappies and Bluegill) here in Wisconsin, they don't care for it one bit. rudyc |

Re: JBL Pole Spear Modification
That's great! I'd love one for my JBL.
Forgive my ignorance, but what is the 2nd piece in the photo, with the factory gold color? Mine didn't come with a piece like that. |

Re: JBL Pole Spear Modification
The gold piece was removed from the end of the 1 piece, 6' pole, it's where the bands went thru and were attached to the pole. It was replaced with the aluminum end cap.

Re: JBL Pole Spear Modification
Oh wait, now that I look at the picture I realize that you most likely did cut it off right? When i said I tried twisting it off I meant the very top.

Re: JBL Pole Spear Modification
Yep, used a tubing cutter to take off the piece.
The first one made was done manually on a lathe. I'm trying to talk a pal into writing a program for his CNC lathe. If he does that, they can be made cost effectively, when done on a manual lathe the time to set up and produce is prohibitive. rudyc |

Re: JBL Pole Spear Modification
Got a friend to make me one!
Took a couple hours to program the mill he used, but I did mention to him it seemed there might be a demand for them. *note, I forgot to give my friend measurements for the depth of the threading. so it turned out the threading was too long to fit all the way into the spear, so I had to grind it down. |
