Re: What shaft for old style JBL Woody 38 Special?

Ah, this is no doubt the problem. There are no flats on the shaft I got. It's the 731-SA, which I gather is for the newer model, which has a different fire control design. Looking at your spreadsheet, the 728-SA was the proper match. That shaft seems to still be available here, so I may just order that one and see about returning the other back to Leisure Pro. Or, I could do some grinding...

JBL having two different guns with the same name, but incompatible shafts, is a PITA. They should make more effort to distinguish new style from old style in their marketing. Instead, they refer to SKU numbers - who knows those?

JBL shafts always had anti-roll flats on the sides of the shaft tail as long as I can remember. You can see them in the mechanism photo. Now their timber guns use the M8 trigger mechanism created by Bill Kitto et al and the "Reaper" guns use a euro type tail, JBL have maybe dispensed with putting the flats on. That is going to be a real bummer for all "Magnum" owners, however three minutes on a bench grinder or even half that for a competent metal worker can install those flats in a jiffy by careful grinding.

One way to do it is to paint the tail with engineer's blue, scribe the lines of where the flat should go and grind away the excess material necessary to achieve the correct size. You want the wishbone notches or shaft tabs on top as they are controlled by matching flats in the walls of the sear box.

According to that shaft pdf above, it seems to have started with the M7 trigger. Unless LP sent me the wrong shaft. I hesitate to grind it since I have only a freehand grinding pedestal, but may if LP won't exchange.

Divenfish above also has a shaft to sell, have to confirm which style it is.

If you are careful then you can whip the material off with a hand/angle grinder and the spear clamped firmly in a bench vise. Or you can file it off with a quality tool steel file. Stainless steel work hardens, so you don't use rubbing strokes, but hard strong press cuts that rip metal off quickly. Remember that there is not a lot to come off, at the max it is 0.313" minus 0.250" divided by 2 on each side as you are removing a skinny "D" cross section. In other words 0.0313" of metal at the most on the centerline. Basically that is SFA to use the vernacular! For those unfamiliar that is Sweet F**k All, an engineering term used in plain speaking metal working machine shops.

How did you go with making the shaft tail flats? Or did you buy another "old skool" JBL shaft?
