Need new gun - suggestions?

hey, i'm new to E coast, and have been away from spearing for a few years.

I got a kayak rig setup and was re-rigging my old Mako Predator 90 today, and while cleaning it the thing is just falling apart - plastic is really brittle.

So now i'm in the market for a new gun.

I'm not sure I want to buy another Mako after my current one fell apart on me.

What gun/polespear would you all recommend for SW East Coast FL spearfishing?

I'll almost be sticking to spots I can get to in my kayak, although I'm not opposed to going out a decent distance if the conditions are good - I stick with shallow water (30' or less).

I like the 90cm for SoCal diving in a lot of reefs and holes, but I don't really know the species or conditions out here at all.

So I'd love to hear any suggestions you all might have? And if you have any used gear/leads on used gear I'd be interested!

110 is a good all around size for here.
Can’t go wrong with a Rob Allen

110 pathos laser if the budget can go a little past rob allen or mako. Super accurate! If not, both the rob allen and mako etr are good guns for the money.

I wouldn't specifically knock the mako for plastic becoming brittle in south florida sun or heat. Most plastic has a finite lifespan in these conditions. Wood guns with all metal components will last longer but also cost a lot more.

Pathos D'Angelo 1 will cost same as rob allen or less and is a solid choice. Rob Allen is strong but with a lower handle.

I'd personally suggest calling up Dano @ Mako and seeing what they can do to help you. That's the one thing they're famous for - good customer service.

But if you just want to buy a new speargun and need an excuse, let me know and I'll delete this post so your spouse doesn't see it

Re: Need new gun - suggestions?

It sounds like you may have a Predator from 7 or 8 years ago. Our unconditional warranty is 3 years on guns.

However, we are currently selling the Predator Pro III version, which is much improved. The handles are now glass filled nylon and are much stronger. We have not had similar issues with the upgraded version.

Please send me you phone number via pm and (a good time to call) and I am sure we can work something out that will make you happy and get you back in the water ASAP.

Thanks
Dano

+1 on pathos laser. Get the carbon 100 or 110 if you can. Put 14 mm small id bands on it and it will shoot the eyes out of just about anything within 15 ft. Best gun ive ever shot.

Makos kick like a mule. Handle is too low. Shoots all over the place.

Handle too low compared to... what? New Pathos? Abellan? Yes.

MAKO handles resemble a lot the old Sporasub Viper/Black Viper/Viper Elite/Aspic handles. All those models shared the same handle.

I have been using Sporasub Viper guns for a long time. True there are more innovative, higher handles, but they are perfectly fine.

The way you mention it, seems like you were referring to MAKO guns as having low handles Riffe style!
