Where Should I Go?

Hey guys, I'm relatively new to spearfishing and have been going to crystal cove a lot lately. I'm going out again this weekend but I'm thinking of giving Dana Point a try. I was just wondering if my luck will be better at crystal cove and if I'll be wasting my time at Dana Point. I've heard good things about both though. Hoping to get a Halibut or two this time.

Re: Where Should I Go?

I am not very familiar with the area you’re planning on diving, but I have been on Spear Board awhile and am familiar with how things work on the board. Here’s some well-meaning advice. The guys on the board are not going to just give up their good spots to someone they don’t know. Rather than asking for spots try posting an introduction, tell people a little about yourself and your experience. Ask if you can join someone when they are going out. This sport is built on trust and mentoring. I’ve met many great southern Cal divers who have shared their experience and time with me and I’m sure they will do the same for you if they get to meet you. Oh, and don’t feel bad if you get a few wise ass answers to this post. I did the exact same thing when I first started.

Good luck and be safe.

Re: Where Should I Go?

Thanks, that's actually the answer I expected to get. It's my new favorite hobby and if I need to find a few places for myself that's totally fine. And thank you for the advice.

Re: Where Should I Go?

as you might have seen, there is not a lot of good fish at crystal cove (newport beach by the way).... laguna beach used to be an awesome place, dozens of locations and opportunities for exploration. now it is closed to all take of marine creatures. a real tragedy.

for OC spearfishermen.... not many secret spots.. blue(and undesignated areas) is only place you can spearfish. https://nrm.dfg.ca.gov/FileHandler.a...55&inline=true

then south of dana point to SD county line there is lots of secret spots but I am not familiar with them. north(west) of newport jetties is all sand and poor vis 'til PV.

dana point or crystal cove... i would do dana point area.. vis would be better at dana probably (we are talking salt creek area here, and get out beyond the surfline)

Re: Where Should I Go?

I don't have any advice for you on dive spots, but I'm going to be in Laguna Beach from the 23rd through the 29th and am also looking for places to dive in the area. If you want to meet up, I'd dive Dana Point with you if you want a dive partner.

Go to Catalina Island or San Clemente Island, much more fish out there.

Re: Where Should I Go?

you should go to a club meeting.

and a quick tip: asking people who don't know you for their spots is just slightly poorer form than asking if you can f*** their girlfriend

Re: Where Should I Go?

I agree with keeping secret spots secret, but damn, how sacred is a place that has public access and a parking lot butted up against it?

Re: Where Should I Go?

Cool, I will definitely check out Dana Point then, sounds like it will be a much better turnout. And, @snorling, send me a private message and maybe we can meet up. I'm going out on Sunday. I originally planned to take a weekend trip down to San Diego but my work schedule got changed so I'm doing DP instead. And how do I find out more info on these club meetings?

you just proved my point for me. Many of the best spots have parking lots "butted right up against them", yet consistently produce because most people don't think to look there, and those that do know about them know to keep their mouths shut... that's why there still are fish at places like that.

this is especially important thanks to gropes like the surfrider foundation, Laguna bluebloods, etc. using biased and fake science to shut down 95% of the spots in oc

Re: Where Should I Go?

you didnt offend me at all!

i was serious with both pieces of advice.

there are some great clubs in your area, and once you go to a couple meetings and get to know some people there, they will gladly help you out.
