Re: cabo dive and surf
A buddy of mine came down for a week to take advatage of the mullet run. Although the mullet are here they seem to be moving around alot. So some days were good other days bad. This particular day was a memorable one because I had been on a dive earlier in the day and got surrounded by a school of eight to ten big roosters in the forty to fifty pound range. I just watched them in awe. I also saw a nice snook that looked about thirty pounds.

Re: cabo dive and surf
A pretty good swell came through the last couple of days. I couldn't go out on friday, the big day, but yesterday and today were still fun. I got some waves early this morning, and then after getting out enjoyed the view of the surf break while having breakfast at the cabo surf hotel. I noticed the viz looked pretty good while I was in the water so I thought I'd try to get a dive in. The air has been in the upper 90's and the water has been in the mid 80's. When I got to the dive spot the viz was not what I expected, 6 to 10 and kinda cloudy green but I really needed some fresh fish and I convinced myself that I would at least take a trigger fish if I could find nothing else. I"ve been seeing some good size finescale triggers and was hoping for one of those but when this orangeside trigger came into my view I didn't hesitate with the shot. I took the small golden trevally when a big school of goatfish came swimming at me from around a rock. I spotted him mixed in with the school. I also saw just the tail of a good size pargo or cabrilla which was down inside a crevice between two big rocks. That was encouraging because the last few weeks, even though I haven't been diving alot and the viz has been marginal, I haven't been seeing much of those quality size fish. Hopefully there will be a break in the south swell and the viz will clear up a little so I can see what's out there and enjoy this really warm water. It's amazing how hard the skin is on a trigger fish.

This summer might be one of the hottest summers we've had in quite a few years. Everyday for the last couple of months it's been around 100. This week we've been getting weather coming over from Sinaloa and the mailand and giving us some cloud cover into the mid mornings. This weekend the cloud cover came in handy because it allowed us to hang out for awhile and watch the surf after a go out. Today, for the sake of the thread title, I went for a dive and surf, except it was a surf and dive. I need fresh fish but can't seem to find the glamorous type like pargo and cabrilla. I know the area I like to dive holds plenty of other good table fare fish like parrots, triggers, gafftop sail pompanos, clown hawkfish, goat fish and croakers. They are there for the taking and today it didn't take long to take a couple. I think this trigger is a finescale trigger. There are two different kinds of triggers that I see in this area and this is the bigger of the two types. Once I hauled this one in I took a close look at it and I was amazed at it's colors. By the time I got back to shore it had lost it all. Hopefully, this will be enough fish untill next weekend. |

Re: cabo dive and surf
Woke up this mornig hoping to get a shore dive in before the waves from hurricane rick showed up. It didn't happen. I got to the beach in time to watch the swell increase before my eyes. It went from a diveable two foot swell to overhead within a couple of hours. I went home to grab my board and headed out to the "country" for some double over head east cape surf with a buddy of mine. I got four nice waves before my kook cord snapped and then I was quickly reminded of how much you're at the mercy of the ocean without your mask, fins and snorkel. There were waves everywhere and perfect conditions. These pictures don't do justice of what the ocean was really like today.
As for the dive part of this post goes, I did get a morning and late afternoon shore dive in yesterday, before any sign of swell showed. I figured I needed to stalk up on fish before the arrival of the hurricane and the shore dive conditions go bad. I got a yellow jack and cabrilla, Chris got a pargo and also a surgeon fish. I would have never thought to take one but they make nice fillets and it's white meat and cooked up fine. Second dive I got a sierra and a yellow snapper. I got a fresh batch of sierra ceviche, fish stock from the head and bones, and six fillets to last me through the storm. Air temp is in the mid ninties with humidity, water temp is mid to upper eighties. |

Re: cabo dive and surf
I really want to get back out to san jose del cabo, I have a time share down there with trendwest. I have not been down there for at least 4 years and would love to go back and get me some triggers.

Re: cabo dive and surf
The southerly swells are starting to find their way up into the Mar de Cortez. That, mixed in with lots of windy days has kept the inshore viz stirred up. Today the swell died a little and so did the wind. At this time of the year it's such a battle, dive or surf? dive or surf? Today I chose to dive and I'm glad I did, because I was fortunate enough to be faced with the decision of whether or not to take a borderline, unsportsman like shot,, and I'm not ashamed to say that I took it.
So there I was, 50 yards from shore, diving down into late afternoon, green water, with about 10 feet of viz. I hadn't seen anything in the last ten minutes since I had stepped off the beach. I go to the bottom at twelve feet and I hear that familiar concussion sound of a fish being spooked, then see a cabrilla about eight feet away. I see him on my right and he's pumping his tail, moving fast out in front of me, in order to hide in the cloudy green water. Luckily my gun was already pointed in the same direction as he glided into his false sense of security of green murk. I barely move my gun to lead him a little more,, and take a shot at a fish that I can't see,,,,, and nail his ass. Water temp was a comfortable 74, air was in the upper 80's. |

Re: cabo dive and surf
Surf or dive, tough choice hehe!
I'm not totally envious, (only slightly, those waves look great!) I am blessed to live 2 minutes walk from the high-tide line of an unspoilt ocean beach myself. The 2 or 3 fellow Aussie surfers I know (out of literally hundreds of others, I've been surfing over 40 years) who have been to Mexico absolutely raved about the place, in fact the 2 who come most immediately to mind, both inveterate surf travellers, reckoned it was the best place they had ever been. Viewing the pics of those waves, I think I know why! Cheers! |

Re: cabo dive and surf
Too much surf and wind to find good in shore diving conditions. Luckily, I have enough cabrilla in the fridge to hold me over untill the next break between south swells. Here's a video of the waves from this morning. YouTube- costa azul, BCS, 23400 04-14-2010.wmv Oh yeah, I got my waves.

Re: cabo dive and surf
There has been constant head high surf for at least a month now with not many oppurtunities to dive. The south wind starts blowing, bringing in cold currents from the pacific and really stirs up the water. Even so, through the not so good viz, We've been seeing Amberjacks. My buddy got one kill and I had two, head banging, sleepless nights, misses. Luckily the clean surf has kept my mind off that.
I got in the water between recent swell lulls and found the same mix of warm and cool currents. Greenish water, 10' viz, average water temp was 77 with a 5 degrree temp swing. During the dive I didn't see much so I took a parrot and gts pompano for skunk insurance. As I was preparing to get out of the water, 10 feet from shore, with my gun uloaded, I see a school of mullet swimming toward me. With interest, I watch it go by and see a big solo late season sierra following them. Damn, another missed opportunity. I reload my gun and get comfortable. 10 feet from shore, where the beach ends and the rocks start, I float for awhile in six feet of water. Sure enough the next wave of mullet come swimming down the beach, they get to the corner where im sitting and start acting confused. I dove down as the mullet were disappearing and came across another fat solo sierra. Might be a personal best. |

Re: cabo dive and surf
I got machaca, and damn is it good! I'm going on my fourth day of eating it. And to think that all the ones I've seen through the years,,,,,,well, they're not safe anymore.
Water has warmed up into the mid eighties and has been looking pretty clear outside the surf zone. Unfortunately there has been non stop surf and not much possibilty for shore diving (think La Paz). After I finish the machaca, I'm outa fish. |

Re: cabo dive and surf
Nice rooster. Make a run up to Punta Pescadero... hence the name. That place was loaded with pargo when I was there. Its about a 2 1/2 hour drive.

Re: cabo dive and surf
Lucky you! surf is up here, but so is the wind. 10-20 kts. And water locally is 52-58*. People are super happy when a YT is caught. I need to talk my dad into a winter break trip. Have fun!
