Spearfishing Regs

Hello South Pacific Spearos!

I will be visiting the S Pacific this summer (your winter) and would like to know where I can find spearfishing regs for New Zealand and elsewhere in the Indopacific. I found Australia's quite easily, but have not been able to find the others. Is spearfishing on scuba permitted anywhere? I enjoy free-diving spearfishing in shallower water but I also enjoy spearfishing with a tank in deeper water ( 20 meters and deeper). Any guidance would be much appreciated!

Try this:
http://www.fish.govt.nz/en-nz/Recreational/default.htm

Scuba spearing is allowed in NZ, but it is fairly frowned upon and most people won't take scuba spearos out on their own boats. However a scuba spearo's dollar is worth the same as a freediving spearo's so charter boats will be all sweet with it.

Thanks for the info., good to know. That is a really huge humphead in your picture! It must be older than me... such a cool looking fish! What are the regulations on humpheads? Considering they are particularly vulnerable to fishing (like most species that are long-lived, slow-growing, and don't reach sexual maturity until later), I hope the regulations are on the conservative side!

Re: Spearfishing Regs

We don't actually get them in NZ, I got that in Tonga.
