27" roller gun build
So my wife is wanting to start spearfishing I saw this as a chance to build a new hole gun with permission
So here's what I have so far, custom grip, carbon fiber head rails with a Sleek internal remote just waiting on her blue carbon fiber dress |

Re: 27" roller gun build
Looking good!
Are you going to use a kevlar/carbon sleeve or cloth for skinning the gun? I do have some yellow kevlar/carbon cloth and I am curious to see how you deal with the edges. I have read everywhere that while carbon cloth sands like a dream, kevlar is a bitch. No way to get a clean edge sanding, you need to cut the fibers. Otherwise it gets fuzzy. Mikel |

Re: 27" roller gun build
I'm going to be using the Kevlar carbon fiber this will be my first time dealing with it so it might get a little fun I'm going to try a small piece out on just a blank piece of wood first to see how the edges go. what I typically do is I run my carbon fiber off the edges of the gun and then epoxy off the edges and then cut back with a dremel so we'll see if this still works for the Kevlar. I'll try to remember to take a bunch of pictures but I'm pretty horrible at that.

Re: 27" roller gun build
So I tried just coating some in 5 minute epoxy and it cuts really easy with a pair of scissors then.
So here's the layup. I'll Give It 24 hr to cure and then try cutting |

Re: 27" roller gun build
A friend of mine usually lays it, when it is still not fully cured (gummy) he uses a scalpel blade to trim it arround the edges and peel off the excess. Then he top coats it with the product of choice, be it epoxy resin or PU marine clear coat. I hope this helps!

Re: 27" roller gun build
So I just found out their specialty scissors just for Kevlar. All I know it didn't come out too bad the only problem was the little nooks and crannies and not having a big fuzz ball in the seem. Letting the final coat of epoxy dry right now. I don't know that this is one I'll try again I think if I do I'll definitely put a coat of black epoxy on first. Yes I said it but of course I will try it again

Re: 27" roller gun build
Probably too late but my humble experience (two guns, another one in the works) is that to get a uniform glass like epoxy coat, you need a rottisiere setup so it doesn't run and drip from the gun. This pretty much guarantees a glass like finish.
You can buy a BBQ rottisiere motor for cheap. I got mine from Aliexpress because they are not something that you could easily find on the hardware stores. But in the US it should be much easier. Anyway, good looking gun! PD: For carbon, kevlar and mixed materials, the scissors need to be serrated to get a good cut. Otherwise the blades go dull in no time and the cuts get ugly quickly! |
