Broken ribs? Will I ever be able to dive again!

Two weeks ago I made a poor decision and jumped in at the wrong place at the wrong time. The first set pushed me into the shallows and disoriented me in the whitewash. The next even bigger set threw me into the rocks and broke three of my ribs. One is offset almost an inch and to add salt to the wound I lost my Denton.

Fast forward to today. I'm sore and stiff but felt good enough to attempt to float around and snorkel. But the water pressure at the surface was painful enough to bring me back to land.

My question is for anyone who has broken ribs before. After enough time will I be able to dive again. Hard to believe 3 weeks ago I was sitting at 95' looking for Uku.

~ Wow, two weeks. I don't really know how deep the cracks
are, however, perhaps you should not flex these bones ( too much)

Broken ribs are super painful, but most people make a full recovery. Pick up a relaxing hobby for the next, oh 6 weeks or so.

I just had a sinus procedure a week ago so I'm sharing your pain.

Re: Broken ribs? Will I ever be able to dive again!

Girlfriend left two days after I broke my ribs so didn't even pull off any missionary.

However after 5 weeks I'm back to diving. My bottom time is about half but getting better. Nearly got a good sized Uku at 60' yesterday. Still recovering but enjoying being back in the ocean.

For sure just let yourself heal properly don't try to rush you'll be back.

Update
I keep continuing to recover more each day. I'm diving almost back at my normal ability. I have been doing lots of stretching each day working on my range of motion and chest flexibility. Slow but steady.

Broken ribs? Will I ever be able to dive again!

Hi there,

Back to your question: will you ever be able to dive?

Yes, you will.

Now When: depends when your ribs are healed. Ribs fracture is a painful process and only you, can gauge the extent (whether flail chest vs uncomplicated fractures) of your healing (ie: when taking deep breath or chest wall movement, that no longer elicits any pain).

Good luck and get checked by a physician. Make sure you don't have pneumothorax (air in your chest cavity), or hemopneumothoax (mix of air/blood) both of which not totally uncommon after ribs fracture...

Good luck
